Kasargod, Jul 19: In a major announcement for football enthusiasts, all schools and professional colleges across the state, including Kasargod, will remain closed on Monday, July 20, as the Kerala government has declared a holiday to enable students to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 final match.
The decision was taken considering that the final clash between Argentina and Spain will take place after midnight, which would severely affect students' sleep and their schedule for the following day. The government clarified that the holiday applies to all government, aided, and private educational institutions. However, previously scheduled examinations will be conducted as per the existing timetable. An official order in this regard will be issued shortly.

Since the final match is slated to begin late at night and likely extend into the early morning hours, parents and various organisations had appealed to the government for a holiday. Initially, only Rajagiri St Chavara CMI Public School in Alappuzha and Gregorian Public School in Maradu had voluntarily announced a holiday. As the demand grew rapidly across the state, the government decided to implement a state-wide closure for the day.
The highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 final will kick off past midnight on Sunday at 12:30 am. If the match finishes within regulation time, it is expected to end by 2:30 am. However, if it progresses into extra time or a penalty shootout, the game could easily stretch until dawn.
Meanwhile, the Kerala police have imposed strict restrictions to ensure public safety and prevent any untoward incidents during victory celebrations. Dangerous bike racing, stunts on public roads, drink driving, speeding, and bursting crackers in a disruptive manner have been strictly prohibited. The department has urged citizens to maintain law and order while enjoying the mega sporting event.
