Mumbai, Aug 7: Yash Raj Films (YRF) is set to venture into the horror genre for the first time, with actor Varun Dhawan roped in to play the lead in the banner's upcoming theatrical horror film.
The yet-to-be-titled project will be directed by Rocket Boys filmmaker Abhay Pannu and is expected to go on floors later this year. The makers are eyeing a theatrical release in 2027.
According to industry sources, the film marks Varun Dhawan's reunion with YRF after Sui Dhaaga: Made in India (2018), in which he starred alongside Anushka Sharma. While the actor was seen portraying a small-town tailor in that film, he will now take on a completely different role as the production house explores the horror genre.

The film will also mark Abhay Pannu's theatrical directorial debut. He earned acclaim for directing the web series Rocket Boys, based on the lives of renowned Indian scientists Homi J Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai.
Pannu has also written the screenplay for the upcoming film. Further details about the storyline, Varun Dhawan's character and the rest of the cast are being kept under wraps.
Known for producing some of Hindi cinema's most successful romantic dramas, action films and thrillers, Yash Raj Films has so far stayed away from horror. With this project, the studio will add another genre to its film portfolio.
The production is scheduled to begin later this year, with additional announcements regarding the title and cast expected closer to the start of filming.
