Alaska, Aug 21: A charter plane carrying eight people crashed near a remote radar facility in western Alaska on Thursday, according to a federal official.

The aircraft was carrying two pilots and six passengers when it crashed near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site, said Clint Johnson, chief of the National Transportation Safety Board’s Alaska region.

The plane had departed from Anchorage and is believed to have crashed early Thursday afternoon while approaching Cape Newenham. There was no immediate information about the condition of those on board.

Local media reports indicated that there were no apparent signs of survivors at the crash site. However, officials cautioned that information about the incident remained preliminary.

The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center launched a search-and-rescue operation after receiving a report of an aircraft incident near the radar site.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as rescue teams assess the crash site and determine the status of the people aboard the aircraft.
