Mumbai, Aug 20: Actor Manoj Bajpayee is set to portray Mahatma Gandhi for the first time in his career in an upcoming historical drama directed by filmmaker Sudhir Mishra and produced by Anubhav Sinha.

The film will explore a lesser-known chapter from India’s independence history, focusing on 21 days in Gandhi’s life during the period when the country was moving towards freedom and Delhi was emerging as the centre of political power.

According to Sudhir Mishra, the story examines Gandhi’s decision to walk away from the centre of power during a crucial period. However, the filmmaker said the move was not a retreat but reflected a significant phase in Gandhi’s personal journey and his approach to redefining his role.

Manoj Bajpayee, known for his versatile and intense performances, will take on the challenging role of the iconic leader for the first time. Actor Saurabh Shukla is also part of the cast.

The project brings together Mishra and Sinha, who have been associated with films dealing with strong social and political themes. Sinha will produce the film through Benaras Mediaworks, while Narendra Hirawat is also attached to the project. The film will be presented by NH Studioz.

Mishra, who is approaching four decades in Hindi cinema, has directed acclaimed films including Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Dharavi and Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin. He has also received three National Film Awards.

The upcoming film aims to present a lesser-known perspective on Mahatma Gandhi during one of the most significant periods in India's history.
