Coimbatore, Aug 23: From leaving a secure corporate job during the pandemic to overcoming back-to-back initial setbacks, Coimbatore native Sruthii R has scripted a remarkable success story by securing All India Rank (AIR) 18 in the highly competitive UPSC civil services examination 2025. Her achievement in her third attempt stands as a powerful testament to resilience, strategic planning, and unwavering focus.
An engineering graduate in electronics and communication from the Hindustan College of Engineering and Technology, Sruthii hails from a family with a strong academic foundation. Her father serves as a principal at a private college, and her mother is a homemaker. Following her graduation, she initially entered the corporate workforce. However, the Covid-19 pandemic became a significant turning point. Realising her true calling lay in public administration and grassroots development, she took the bold step of quitting her job to dedicate herself entirely to preparing for the civil services.

Overcoming setbacks with strategy
The path to AIR 18 was not without hurdles. Sruthii failed to clear the preliminary stages in her first two attempts. Instead of getting discouraged or taking a break, she utilised the time to build a robust foundation for the mains, focusing heavily on her optional subject and answer writing. By the time she finally cracked the prelims in her third attempt, her mains preparation was already rock solid.
Her success was built on a balanced blend of structured coaching and disciplined self-study. She initially spent nearly two years in New Delhi building conceptual clarity through a foundation course before returning to Coimbatore for independent preparation. After clearing the prelims, her journey was bolstered by the Tamil Nadu government's Naan Mudhalvan Nangal Scheme, which provided accommodation, food, and academic guidance for the mains and interview stages.
Sruthii’s preparation strategy was highly analytical. For the prelims, she extensively analysed the previous ten years' question papers, annotating them directly to identify recurring patterns rather than simply reading them. For the mains, she prioritised daily answer writing, ensuring her responses were enriched with maps, diagrams, and data points.
A multifaceted achiever
Beyond academics, Sruthii’s diverse interests played a key role during her personality test. She holds a world record in Silambam, a traditional martial art of Tamil Nadu, which is recognised by the Cholan Book of World Records. During her UPSC interview, the panel engaged her in a friendly discussion about her passion for the martial art and her hobby of caring for dogs, showcasing her well-rounded personality.
Sruthii discovered her name on the first page of the UPSC results PDF while travelling on a train, a joyful moment that marked the culmination of years of relentless hard work. Her journey from facing early failures to securing a top rank now serves as a beacon of inspiration for thousands of civil service aspirants across the country, proving that trusting the process and maintaining a positive mindset can lead to extraordinary achievements.
