Bangalore: Doc on the Move - Now Dial 104 for Instant Medical Assistance

Bangalore, Jun 16: Police - 100, fire - 101, ambulance - 102 - these are emergency contact numbers throughout India. Now, a new number will be added to the list - 104 - for medical assistance, which the government will introduce very soon.

The 104 - HIHL (Health Information Helpline) is likely to be introduced within the next two months.

104 is a tollfree number. People from even remote places of the state can call this number to get free medical assistance from a healthcare staff. If the case is serious, the staff will contact specialists or surgeons and provide appropriate guidance to the patient.

That's not alll. Mental illness, suicidal tendencies, or any other personal problem can also be discuss with the staff who will provide relevant information and possible solutions to the problems. The staff will also assist in further medical treatment if needed, along with providing information pertaining to any blood bank and pharmacies close to the patient's residence.

If they receive any information related to air-borne and water-borne diseases in a particular area, the health department officials will take necessary steps to eradicate these diseases, and also guide the residents of the area to take appropriate measures.

In the intial stage, 100 calls will be attended to per day, which will be later increased to 300 calls per day, said Suresh Kumar, minster for law and parlimentary affairs. The helpline will be set up at a cost of Rs 16 crore, he said.

A special feature of this helpline is that, if a person calls this number from a mobile phone seeking information on any minor health problem, a medical prescription will be sent to the number from which the person has made the call, along with more information on the health problem and possible solutions.

    Rakesh shetty, mangalore....I dont think it will help the needy...with attending 100 calls per day....as per population of Karnataka (over 61 million).....It may take over 160 years to reach all the families..considering 10 persons in a family...!!!??? Simple Mathematics man...this can be calculated by a person who knows simple division and multiplication...!!! Will you be alive for 160 years...?

    A good move. But 100 calls a day, is it enough? How can Govt. expect providing service to only 100 people and more chronic thing is WAITING TO GET THROUGH! We all know that HELPLINE NUMBERS are "BUSY" whenever required desperately. Lets keep our fingers crossed!

    On the outset - this helpline 104 when materializes will be a good move by the Govt. Still two months to go to know if this will be available by then. Looking at various Govt. Projects of earlier, nothing has been finished on time - at least a year to two are usual completion period from the date for completion of any project to complete.
    And - May be the caller will call 10 times and if there is no answer to his call - may be it will too late for the sick person who wanted urgent medical assistance. And if this delay happens to a mentally ill person or a person with suicidal tendencies - they will either more crazy or commit suicide immediately.
    Important for this helpline is to man the calls without fail - 24x7
    I hope this will be monitored by the Authorities.
    Otherwise, I think this scheme will be a burden on the ex-chequer and sizable amount in the pocket of minister etc.

    Looks like a case of providing ad-hoc health solutions at the outset! Imagine people from rural
    and remote areas describing their
    ailment over phone and getting instant solutions! A sure shot
    recipe for health backfiring!

    Although it is a good move, callers will die as they keep calling and no reply as only 100 calls will be attended....for hundred calls how many people are required ??? Why 16 Crores...anyway hope for the better Medical assistance.
