M'lore: ABVP Demands Action Against St Aloysius for Terming Student 'Unsatisfactory'

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (NM)

Mangalore, Jun 19: The members of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) on Tuesday June 19 announced a protest against St Aloysius PU College for misjudging a former student because he was an ABVP activist and had taken part in an anti-corruption protest against the College's orders.

Addressing a press meet, state secretary Ramesh K explained that J K Bindu Madhav Tilak, who did his PUC in St Aloysius College, had taken part in an ABVP protest supporting Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement in 2011. The College did not give permission to its students to participate in the protest, but the students went ahead with their plans. Later, based on video and photographic evidence, the College is said to have identified the protesting students and termed Tilak's character as 'unsatisfactory'.

Condemning the move, Ramesh emphasized that Tilak was an honest student who also maintained good attendance, but the College had not done justice to him. He said that the College was exploiting its students and appealed to the education department to take action against the College.

The protest will be held on Wednesday June 20, wherein students from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts will demand action against the College submit a memorandum in this regard to the state government. The students will demand that the college issues a fresh conduct certificate not only to Tilak but all those students marked 'unsatisfactory' for taking part in the anti-corruption protest.

ABVP district secretary Chinmay Rai and Bindhu Madhav were present.

Schools have to maintain discipline - St. Aloysius of all the colleges maintains high standards. Caste, creed, religion aside the goal is education! The institution has served thousands. This clown has no business to skip classes no matter what the cause is. Anna didn't skip school while Gandhi was in jail? Some of narrow minded, uneducated people like to bring an institution down because its "hip". I say find some other profession. Try this with another college - see where you land. Get a life buddy. Lets not get education mixed up with personal vendetta.

Any Academic institution is well within it's rights to enforce discipline. If it does not suit any individual to follow what 99.9% of the Student's adhere to in the interest of their own well being and future, they are at liberty to leave. Let the ABVP start colleges with their own funds to cater to their wards and groom them as future citizens of this Great country. The Management of SAC does not gain or lose monetarily if students protest - SAC is a brand that is known worldwide for its focus on grooming students to be outstanding members of society at large and not just members of a small cell called ABVP or BD or Sena etc.

Unfortunately, I perceive the comments made by the two readers having communal overtures. Whilst it is of primordial importance that a student adheres to the regulations of an institution, curtailing his/her freedom to participate in a completely non-political movement and then singling out the student, is a disgrace and against the rights that the constitution grants in this country. An institution like St.Aloysius which has in fact encouraged meaningful debate amongst its students and has produced some luminaries in every field, should not, and cannot afford to have such unrealistic attitude, and it indeed smacks of intolerance, which is a substantial deviation from its founding principles.

When Madhav Tilak was a student of St. Aloysius, he is supposed to follow the norms directed by the College. If not, St.Aloysius College will definitely refer the conduct evaluation sheet of the student while issuing conduct certificate.

I still remember in early 1980, a PUC commerce student studying in St.Aloysius, who secured a rank in PUC exam, was denied a seat in degree and finallly got addmission in one of the Colleges in Karkala Taluk.

Why do they need a certificate from the college in the first place? A certificate from RSS or BJP or Rama Sene would be more than enough to be a goondas anywhere in the State. If ABVP dictates to the college what type of certificate to be issued, then we don't need the college. A certificate from Nagesh or Rakesh would be fine!

ABVP is around for donkey,s years and I havent heard any major contribution by them to any areas in education, social justice or law and order. On the other hand the said college throughout its existence has changed the very cultural landscape of the area. Its like ant taking on an elephant
