Saudi Arabia to Build City Only for Women

London, Aug 12 (PTI): It's truly a no man's land! Saudi Arabia is planning to build a city exclusively for women in a bid to encourage career oriented females within its strict Sharia law.

The Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon) has been asked to bring the country at par with the rest of the modern world by building the all-women city, with construction to begin next year, according to a Saudi media report.

The new city will allow women's desire to work without defying the country's strict Islamic laws.

Sharia Law is the moral code and religious law of Islam dealing with crime, politics, and economics, as well as personal matters such as sexual intercourse, hygiene, diet, prayer, and fasting.

Although Saudi Sharia law does not prohibit women to work, figures show that only 15 per cent of women are represented in the workforce.

The plan coincides with the government's ambitions to get women to play a more active part in the development of the country. Among the stated objectives are to create jobs, particularly for younger women.

"I'm sure that women can demonstrate their efficiency in many aspects and clarify the industries that best suits their interests, their nature and their ability," Modon's deputy director-general, Saleh Al-Rasheed, said.

"We are now working on a second industrial city for women. We have plans to establish a number of women-only industries in various parts of the kingdom," the 'Daily Mail' quoted Rasheed, as telling Saudi daily newspaper al-Eqtisadiah.

There will be women-run firms and production lines for women. As part of a mass overhaul of its workforce and its bid to get women into work, the state is also attempting to replace foreign salespeople with Saudi women.

This summer, women started replacing staff in cosmetics and perfume shops, only half a year after they replaced male sales staff in lingerie stores.

Last September, King Abdullah announced that women will be able to vote and run in the 2015 local elections.

The concept is not new in SAUDI ARABIA.LADIES only MARKETS were EXISTED in every cities. But this one in large scale yet be tried. It is in policy level only.To initiate such kind of felicity a comprehensive study required as cons are more than pros.If it is materialized it could be second world record as the first one is NO FILM THEATER through out KSA!!!! By the by if women folks were empowered economically, it is a good news.

This is a good gesture by Saudia and a lot of Muslim women who are distressed and abandoned and harassed by their husbands in India and other countries could find some hope in this city and earn a living. I hope it will happen soon.

Its very very unfortunate to note that people have commented against the whole concept highlighting their ignorance about shariah law. One should know the subject before commenting or else its like seeking the advise from a lunatic.

Hope people would comment sensibly with more maturity....

@Dinesh Poojary, Kundapura/Bengaluru , it is not necessary that your view is perfect for burkqa, as muslim woman, man and whole society is happy with it. burqa using in public place, not in home afore wall. It's primalry objective is avoid the glimps from non-mahram.

Not sure whether this would change women's status:
If I understand Saudi society considers women can't live independently.
Women considered to a thing they own and they are not like being like men
women used as a show case and they should not drive, work and they are just like private property, for example like car, house etc..which is purchased in consideration.
    God bless our world.

Imagination of a Womens world is really horrifying. Will there be peace?? I really wonder.
How can it be controlled without men? How will they handle Electrical work? Civil operations like Work in confined space,If any construction related work, plumbing or any manual handling work? Truck drivers?? Civil Defense as ladies?? As it is no man land.
God Only Take Care of such an initiative. Let it not lead to any destruction.

I don't think it will cause any positive change in the society. Men and women should work together for the growth of the country and the society. No need to keep them separately.

Brothers and sisters live together, wife and husband live together. But why can't men and women live/work together in society?

In India also there was a system where women were limited to four walls. Evolution has happened, people get educated and due to this women are seen almost every field now a days. In cities like Bangalore, it is difficult to see educated women sitting at home.

It is the time for Muslim people to make changes to happen. First they need to remove the Burkha in the public. Let them wear it inside their house. As per my knowledge Muslim women are not supposed to show their face to others. This is a blind belief. In Hindus also there were many blind beliefs like this. But we have slowly overcome many such acts in the last 100 years.

Muslims should give more importance for education. Many people quit education before 5th std and get into work in garages, cleanings, garments, shops etc. In Bangalore i have seen many such people who can't even read Kannada sign board (forget English).

The Sharia Law is the moral code and religious law of Islam dealing with crime, politics, and economics, as well as personal matters such as sexual intercourse, hygiene, diet, prayer, and fasting is the 13th century code which doesn't work in 21st century. It is good to know that Saudis have realized the fact finally.

This is good development, Islamic sharia is the only one solution to control crime and extortion in the Nation. Now the women can work and play anywhere inside the City.comparing the other nation in the world Saudi is very less percentage of crime registered Due to Islamic Sharia implementation.
