Mangalore: Bishop Lays Foundation for 28 Houses at Mariashram

Mangalore, Aug 15: Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza laid foundation stones for 28 houses to be built for the landless poor at Mariashram Church in Talapady here on Wednesday August 15.

The project is being undertaken by the diocese of Mangalore, and Naveen Cardoza of Marian Projects Private Limited has come forward to construct the 28 houses at zero profit.

Speaking on the occasion, the bishop said that this project of constructing houses for the landless poor is free of cost. "In this way we give freedom to the poor by helping them in their needs," he added.

"Each house will be constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 12 lac on a plot of 4.15 cents," he said.

On the occasion of its post-centenary silver jubilee, the diocese of Mangalore had planned to construct 161 houses for the poor, including this project. "The 100th house was inaugurated recently at Ranipura," he said, adding that there are plans of constructing more houses for the poor.

Speaking on Independence Day, he said the city is losing its freedom day by day as one can see many immoral activities taking place. He thanked all the donors for enabling the dioceses to take up the housing project.

Fr Onil D’Souza, director of CODP welcomed and gave a brief introduction on the project, while Fr William Menezes proposed the vote of thanks.

Fr Nelson Olivera, parish priest of Mariashram church, Naveen Cardoza of Mavian projects, Elias Fernandes, Four Wings director, Sushil Noronha, jubilee secretary, Fr J B Crasta, Felix Albuquerque among others were present.

Jacintha D’Souza and Anitha D’Souza, beneficiaries of the project were also present on the occasion.
