Mangalore, Aug 16: A protest organized by Jaago Mangalore Association here on Thursday August 16 was stalled by the police who took some of the protestors into custody.

The Association had planned a protest against the recent  home stay attack, in a bid to demand action against the perpetrators and justice for the young victims.

However, the police swung into action even before the protest could begin and detained several including Jaago Mangalore Association chief co-ordinator Vijaynath Shetty, advocate Dinesh Ulepady, victims of the attack Vijay Kumar and Gurudatt and George and Rajesh Kundar of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.

The police claimed that the organizers had not taken prior permission to hold the protest. However, a source close to Jaago Mangalore Association told Daijiworld that they had applied for permission and had even agreed to the police request not to put up video screens as had been planned earlier.

The protest was supposed to start from the DC's office and pass through Hampankatta and Jyothi and culminate at Navabharat Circle, but the protestors were arrested before they could start the procession.

The road show had been planned as run-up to the protest to be held by Jaago Mangalore Association on August 21 against the same incident.

Pandeshwar police who detained the protestors released them later in the evening.

"We have so far not received any written communication either from the police or from any other authority denying us permission to stage the protest. Hence our protest campaign will continue unhindered and as planned. We shall hold the road shows at different junctions in the city as planned every evening till August 21. I once again appeal to all the citizens to participate in the protest march on August 21 which will commence at Jyothi Circle at 4 m and conclude with protest meet at Nehru Maidan at 5 pm," said Vijaynath Shetty.

He further added, "Atrocities like Padil attack can happen only because good people keep quiet. The silence of the majority of peace loving citizens has encouraged the anti social elements and the vested interests who are backing them to hold the city to ransom. If we are to defeat such forces, we should refuse to be bogged down and put up a united stand."

It is to learn that the peaceful and easy going city of Mangalore that I knew and fell in love with from my student days in Nitte, has to bear witness to such senseless violence. I was in Mangalore and surrounding areas last year and was amazed to see the progress and development made (such as Mangalore airport, which is amongst the cleanest there is) However, this news of Home Stay attack is an ugly blot. Vijaynath Shetty is my childhood friend and knowing his sense of fairness and generous spirit It is only natural for him to get involved in staging a protest against this incidence. But where is everyone else?

Thank you all for following us on the issue. I met the Police Commissioner this morning and again sought his clearance for our planned Protest March and Protest Meet on 21st August 2012. However the Commissioner expressed his unwillingness to grant permission for the protest explaining that the issue was getting hot and the police force would be unable to handle any untoward law and order situation that might arise during the protest.

Our movement was meant to be a civilized and peaceful protest with the main objective being to express strong disapproval against violence, especially violence against women. As Jaago Mangalore Association has no intension to break the law or create public nuisance in order to voice our protest, I regret to inform all concerned that as of now, the protest planned for 21st August stands cancelled. I thank all members of the public, and also most importantly, the media for following us on this issue and I am sure with your support we have made our point absolutely clear. Through this I once again urge everyone to shun violence and help create a Better Mangalore to Live. Jaago Mangalore Association will continue to work for the cause of Better Mangalore in the future.

    Hi Vishanath Shettre,
Very well done sir. You are the example of our youth to show how one can live a life peacefully and fight for their rights. Once upon a time Mangalore was a so good place to live with peacefully, respectfully and we were very proud to call ourselves Mangaloreans. Today we see so much going on in Mangalore can’t even imagine why such hatred among people towards fellow brothers and sisters. We can’t turn our land into Saudi or Pakistan or Afghan rather work together to make a better place to live for all.
God bless you. We pray for your work to be successful to make Mangalore a better place for all. Prayers are the best powerful tool to fight evil people. Good luck man. I am also from your place Yedapadavu in Mangalore but in Mumbai from Wadala. See you sometime.
    Best Regards
    Alwyn

This protest was called basically to say that 'Lets make Mangalore a Better Place to Live'. I am fully against people resorting to violence, especially against women, just because they don't agree with them when the law is there to address this.

Now let me explain. We people have elected our government since ages, whether it is Congress or BJP or JDS or any other party. This government which has been elected by us has made certain laws for us to follow, like we are allowed to drink after 18 years, has given licence to open a pub, a bar or a home stay etc. The government has allowed us to wear clothes whatever is sold in the market because they approve the sale of such goods or the government has not made any rule regarding what is right clothes to wear like they have done in Saudi Arabia.

Hence we are following whatever the government elected by us has approved. So why should we be blamed? If you say that there were drugs, then it is the failure of the government to curb this. Now these kids went to the pub which is approved by the government elected by us. They were hit there. They were having a party in a house. They were hit there. They booked a room in a home stay. They were hit there. Then where should they go and drink? And if drinking is wrong it is the responsibility of the parents to curb it. Nobody else.

You have no right to hit somebody because you don't agree with what he or she is doing as per the law of the land which was made by the gov’t elected by you. If you don't agree to it then tell your government to change the law.

First of all I really appreciate all your comments, whatever they may be. Everyone is entitled to their views, so here I would like to express my views.

First of all I have organized this protest only because I wanted to protest, irrespective of how many people join me. Today it is someone else, tomorrow it could be my daughter or my mother or any woman I know.

For your information, the protest was at 5.30 pm and the police picked us at 5.30 before the protest started. There were lot of people standing on the sides waiting to join the protest but they were scared to join because there were more than 75 cops. So contrary to what some of you say, this protest was successful.

I appreciate the police’s work when they arrested us because we didn’t have permission and the Pandeshwar police officers behaved like gentlemen with us.

Check this out! Today in all the papers, the chief minister has put big advertisement saying that ‘Karnataka is safe for North East people’. Why can’t he same the same thing to Mangalore people? I will be more than happy if did that. I only want 'Mangalore to be a Better Place to Live'

Also this is real face of Congress & like minded people, who keep on repeating a slogan trying to win hectically public attention. Media too is blowing the news out of proportion.

MANGALORE POLICE ARE GOOD TO ARREST ON PEACEFUL PROTESTORS AND NOT LOOTERS, CRIMINALS OR RAPISTS AS THEY ARE THE SAME SAFFRON FORCES CALLED HJV ACTIVITIES WHO ATTACKED THE BOYS AND GIRLS AT HOMESTAY. SO DEFINITELY MANAGLORE POLICE WILL ARREST PROTESTORS AS THE GOVERNMENT IS OF BJP AND THE HOME MINISTER AND POLICE ARE BJP PEOPLE. SO WHAT WE CAN EXPECT WITH THESE POLICE. EVERYTHING IS POLITICISED. Mangalore police force becomes notorious for their action against common citizens and minority community. Mangalore police force is a mixture of complete crooks and goons. Those who are planted condom in the Beauty parlor for not giving the protection money, those who are asking the protection money from ordinary business man, how a common man can expects the justice from Mangalore police. When crime took place they will reach there for the closing in ceremony and when people want to protest they reach there even before the ceremony starts in.

    R. Ashoka and The present CM in his speech on ID had reiterated their earlier "WORD OF HONOUR" that action will be taken against the attackers for taking law in their hands.
Since then no action whatsoever has been taken and Ashoka who said goonda act will be used against the attackers, is so SILENT now.
Does it show , he sent his manjula to the dirty work for him, like yeddy used to do with so called "AKKA"
Why Ashoka is so silent and the police are trying to stem the rallies against the attack on innocent people?
Has Kalladka threatened him and the CM with dire action, if they gave into pressure!!!!!
Are Ashoka and CM are stooges of Kalladka?
What a state of affairs in Karnataka, law and order at it's lowest with tom, dick and harry ruling the state and CM DCs ministers etc dancing to their tune If this is BJP Govt. they should wear peticoats!!!
People are running away from Bangalore. There is no security for any citizen in Bangalore other than those goondas.
