Beltangady: Gold, Cash Worth Lacs Looted from Surya Sri Sadashiva Rudra Temple

Beltangady, Aug 23: Thieves broke into the famous Surya Sri Sadashiva Rudra Temple, Nada on Tuesday August 21 night and decamped with cash and gold worth lacs of rupees.

Rs 90,000 in cash and 88 grams of gold, totally worth around Rs 3.5 lac, was reported missing.

The thieves entered through the north door of the temple. The thieves forcefully open the iron door in the north direction of the temple with the help of a weapon, and then entered by breaking into the temple office, it is learnt. The cash and valuables were kept in a cupboard, which they broke open. In all, the thieves broke six locks.

The incident came to light on Wednesday August 22 morning when the priest came to the temple.

A rudraksh garland weighing 32 grams, a gold item weighing 32 grams, a bangle and a small circle garland weighing 8 grams each, karimani and cash worth rupees 90,000 were stolen, but the silver ornaments were left untouched.

Police suspect that it was a pre-planned theft and that a person familiar with the temple may have been involved. The siren that was installed has not been funtioning for a week, and procedures for installation of CCTV and security guards were in progress. It is suspected that the thieves had information in this regard as well.

A case has been registered in this regard.

There had been a major theft at this temple six years back, but the case is not yet solved. Cases of theft have been increasing in the Beltangady Laila surroundings over the last ten days. A few days back, two thefts were reported from Laila and surroundings.
