Mangalore, Sep 8: As many as 84 Sri Lankan refugees were saved from the clutches of human traffickers here at the New Mangalore Port while they were being transported to Australia last night 11.00 pm, on September 7.

Pratap Reddy, IGP informed here at a press meet that as many as 14 people were arrested. They posed themselves as the agents in the pretext of sending these refugees to a foreign country through sea route for better opportunities.

Among those arrested are C Dinesh Kumar (27), Rajeev Gandhi (28), Maria Jamsan (22), Shivakumar (28), S RAvichandran (30), Shajahan (33), Mahendran (41), S Suresh (26), Thavarassa (46), Mariya Siran (33), Siraj (37), Yakoob (40) and Saleem (28).

Tagging the incident as ‘the first major case of human trafficking in the state of Karnataka’ he added that IPC section 120 (b) , section 420 on cheating with conspiracy, Foreigner’s Act (Section 14) and Foreigner’s Order (Rule 5) is registered against the accused .

These people disguised as agents lured the 84 refugees of better employment, foreign citizenship. The 84 refugees include 22 are women, 56 men and 6 children belonging to 23 different refugee camps in Tamil Nadu, he said.

Acting on a tip off, the district police led by ACP Kavita seized the boat while they were being transported to Australia. He also said that all the refugees are in the protective custody and no case will be registered against them.

Explaining the incident, he added, that the accused bought a boat registered by the name ‘Shri Raksha’ from a person in Chitrapura by paying Rs. 11.5 lakhs. The police found 6000 liters of stored diesel and a huge quantity of food stuff on board. They also confiscated Rs 2,84,000 in cash, 10 mobile phones and identity cards of refugee camps.

In the preliminary interrogation, it is learnt that the agents had tried to send these refugees to Australia on two earlier occasions through the state of Kerala but their attempts ended in failure. Therefore, they came to Mangalore.

Pointing out other such incidents, he said in the year 2011, 7 cases of human trafficking were traced across India, mainly from Tamil Nadu and in the year 2012, 13 more cases were found till August. However, this is the major case of such a type, he said.

Confirmed sources said that 'those refugees who go out of their camps without permission are severely punished. The refugees are only permitted to go out on the condition that they return to camp the same evening. Police sources said that there was no alert signal given even after such a huge number went missing from the camps.

ACP Kavitha of Central Sub-division, Dr H N Venkatesh Prasanna, CCB Inspector, Y Gangi Reddy, and Coastal Security Police Inspector were present at the meet.

It's not a big thing getting an INDIAN PASSPORT to anyone.....You know how many Bangladeshis are having both INDIA & BANGLADESH Passport???, b'cos one of my friend told me reagarding this since he is working abroad in QATAR in a man power supply co.(Bin Darwish Manpower Services). Qatar Govt is very strict in issueing visas to PAKISTANIS & BANGLADESHIS, Indains gets easily, so if they need people from Bangladesh they just get indain visas & inform the persons to embark from India(mostly from West Bengal)holding Indian Passport.
Infiltering in India border is not a big thing & ofcos money does rest of the job(Getting Indian Passport), since all of us witnessing the current situation in Assam.

I wonder how could so many people fit into this little craft. Moreover, it's a miracle that all those people survived in that boat.

Mr Patric Jeppu,Mangalore,my first comments are based on DAJIWORLD's initial news item regarding subject matter which had no detailed stuffs regarding refuge status/plight/nationality of the victims/perpetuaters etc etc .In the second comments,Daijiworld d the news item with more inputs so that I am forced to change accordingly. My first one comments may be inaccurate or looks like biased so that it was clarified in second Comments

MR RAVI SHANKER SHENAVA MANGALORE,FYI,one of the gentleman from refuge camp of TN working with me having INDIAN PASSPORT. Though,I agree with you for some extent, the situation not entirely like that. One more instance..One of my Superior Sri lankan had worked with our company and his son/daughter were educated and employed in India as AIRCRAFT MECHANIC and female employed in US state department.Sri Lankan refugees migrating to western countries is a trend under the circumstance because they were given refuge status with out hassle.

It is look like a Action of International human trafficking chain doing this lucrative business from indian soil and with succesful attempts! . It is very pity to watch the newborn babies and the mothers who is travelling in the sea with and it's harsh weather conditions. Sea routes is always considered soft way to escape illegals in and out without any proper security check ups.The incident is an eye opener to our security system to control the coastal areas with more facilities in avail and to control any illegal activities of all kinds, the illegal actions is very dangerous to even Indian security itself?.

The word ' Saved by Police' cannot be used for these people because so far they were living in a hell called Refugee camps in Tamil Nadu and now they wanted to escape from that hell and go to Australia where there is shortage of Manual Labours and payment is good, and Australia has officially allowed Sri lankan refugees to settle on their Soil. After all these refugees are not Indian citizens but Sri lankan citizens. Jayalalitha & Karunanidhi parties just used these Sri Lanka refugees as Publicity materials only to win votes without any genuine concern. These refugees were only trying to escape from inhuman conditions in refugee camps in T.N. and make a decent living in Australia. Of course these old boats were not safe thats all. Can we call this as shattering of dreams of these refugees by Police?.

India's population would have come down a bit.The Police don't understand this.Their eagerness was to have these photographs to show their greatness.

The Police did nothing to the hooligans during the Beer Pub attack. Why the hypocracy ?

The latest s by DAIJIWORLD over the issue changed my approach to the issue. After going through the snaps,I really pity on them.Rightly said Mr Sharath C.Mangalore.Look@ their food!Pathetic and horrible scene. The refuges don't know the fate of prospective (would be) political refuges of Aust.We are seeing lot of such cases/scenes in visual media in which some times Coastal gourd of respective states turning down from the international or their nation's water. Some times such boats are forced to drown in the middle of the sea so just imagine the fate of women and children.Thank god we are blessed with everything but still were cruel to each other.May god bless them with means for a respectful living.

I think, we in India, either lack proper rules and regulations regarding the privacy of individuals or are not aware of. Other countries do not allow publication of the pictures of refugees caught, unless they are charged with criminal acts in a court of law.

How can these people reach the shores of Austalia in this horrible looking, corroded fishing boat. This is something strange, either they should be picked up by some ship or it may be a nearby destination, otherwise they will definitely perish in the mid seas.

How this SRILANKANs were infiltrated in Indian soil other than those who has refuge status?Where is Coastal Guard and nevvy? Human trafficking is a risky business as these boats were either made to drown, forced to return midway etc etc.Italy,Aust,Belgium france Cyprus etc are favored destination of so called politically/ethnically oppressed people.
