New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS): An umbrella organisation of Delhi's resident welfare associations (RWAs) Wednesday slammed the full-page advertisements issued by the government in major dailies boasting of providing "cent percent power" to the residents of the city.
Calling the advertisements a "colossal waste of public money" and a "poor joke", it said that instead there had been a 100 percent hike in power bills.
"While Delhi residents are reeling under the 100 percent hike in power tariff bills, the government, with such advertisements is poking fun at Delhiites," said Anil Bajpai, president, Delhi Residents Forum and RWA Federation, Delhi East.
"We demand Delhi chief ministers' resignation for helping power discoms (distribution companies) and further wasting public funds which could have been used for better purposes including fighting dengue," he added.
Bajpai further said that the power privatisation model in Delhi was "flawed, corrupt and designed to profit private companies".
"The government should increase the power tariff rates in the VIP NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Corporation) area first and bring it at par with the rest of capital before raising the tariff in other parts of the capital," he said.
According to V.N. Bali of Ram Vihar RWA, the private power discoms were making enough profits and the recent hike in tariff was yet another conspiracy to maximize profits further.
"The RWA's have been fully opposing the earlier power tariff hike till full CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) audit is done of the accounts of private distribution companies," said Bali.
