Mangalore, Dec 22:
The 12th 'Chavadi Koota' organized by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy was held at the Academy hall here on Saturday December 22.

The theme of the programme was 'Media's Contribution to the Development of Tulu Literature and Culture'.

On the occasion senior journalist Malar Jayaram Rai was honoured with the 'Chavadi Sanmana'. Acknowledging the honour, he said that many Tuluvas have been expecting the media to realize the dream of Tulu language's inclusion in the 8th schedule of the Constitution. But the language, backed with all credentials, needs its native speakers to wake up and work towards the fulfilment of this dream, he said.

He asserted that the language is yet to get its due honour. Known for their beautiful and trustworthy nature, Tuluvas have always upheld truth, he said.

Chief guest senior journalist Anand Shetty said that Tuluvas should all come together to oppose the Netravati river diversion project. Journalist U K Kumarnath said that Tulu Yakshagana as well as Mangalore Akashavani were effective media. "The work of Tulu language is being carried out abundantly in far off countries," he said.

Journalist Balakrishna Puttige said that youth clubs in villages of Tulunadu have played a vital role in spreading the fragrance of the language.

DK district working journalists' union president P B Harish Rai said that in modern social media like Facebook, Tulu language is being used extensively, while Udupi district working journalists' union president Kiran Manjanabailu said that a sustained fight to improve the existence of Tulu language is the need of an hour. Journalist from Mumbai Dayasagar Chowta drew the attention of the audience to the fact that earlier announcement of train schedule was made in Mangalore Railway Station in Tulu, but not anymore.

Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy president Umanath Kotian presided. He said that arrangements will be made in all the taluks to teach Tulu script to those who are interested. Regarding inclusion of Tulu language in 8th schedule of the Constitution, he said that a report will be prepared and a delegation will meet the Prime Minister and discuss the issue.

Yadhava Karkera welcomed. Durga Kumar Nayarkere delivered the vote of thanks. Kadri Navneeth Shetty compered.

As said above it’s the work of every “tuluwa” to come forward to fulfill the dream of 8th schedule of the Constitution. I won’t think it would be an easy task as in India we need to have a massive movement of people for anything to get achieved. Also regarding learning of the tulu scripts I feel the best option is put in school as an optional (not to force non tuluwas who are not interested) in and around the borders of tulunad. I mean add the scripts in the current tulu language subject instead of or along with kannada scripts so that when the child grows up he will be clear with the scripts of his mother tongue unlike older generation tulu parents. So along with the children parents can also do learn a bit of scripts and followed so …you can see more and more people having their own scripts in a matter of years ahead. The other way is to make the script in public display by putting the main road maps, posters, public displays, names etc in tulu scripts along with kannada /English so that more and more people get used to it. If we do so I am sure the new generation will gradually make the lost dead scripts back to life. Also we have big people in govt. like Moily , Oscar etc.. as well as our local ministers who can make this happen if they put their little more effort.
