Minister Kota's Latest Salvo: Ban on Depicting Gods, Goddesses

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Dec 26:
Karnataka’s Muzrai Minister Kota Srinivasa Poojary, who hails from the coastal Udupi district famous for its temples, has now come out with a proposal for banning depiction of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

The ban will be against portrayal of Hindu Gods and Goddesses on clothes, especially ''T-Shirts" and other readymade garments, and also on all fireworks cracker packs including match-boxes.

''I am seriously considering a move to prevent bars and restaurants being named after Hindu Gods and Goddesses as the activities taking place inside such places is not always in accordance with religious sentiments," he said and wondered how can bars be named after Gods and Goddesses as it would be ''totally inappropriate."

The minister, who created history of sorts soon after becoming minister by ordering special pujas in all the State’s 34,000 plus temples for invoking rain gods at a cost of little over Rs 18 crore, said an official circular banning the portrayal of images of Hindu Gods and Goddesses will be issued soon.

The reason for the latest official move, explained the minister, was because men and women, especially young boys and girls and even adults, who were such clothes and T-Shirts visit various places, including bars and even while watching sexually explicit adult movies with ''A" certificates from the censors.

''It is an insult to Gods and Goddesses," he said explaining that the Government wanted to prevent people from wearing clothes and visiting places that may be considered offensive to religious sentiments and beliefs.

As for packs of firecrackers and matchboxes, the minister said the packs with images of Hindu Gods and Goddesses were often discarded and thrown to the streets.

''One can find people trampling over such packs or motor vehicles driving over such packs. These packs can be found in garbage dumps or gutters and such other places where human and animal excreta is found," he said pointing out that it was necessary to put an end to this type of nuisance.

The circular would also aim at preventing misuse of private tiny temples from conducting black magic, the minister said.

The minister said several small temples have mushroomed on roadsides both in rural and urban areas.

Families who own these tiny temples, the minister said were allegedly indulging in several anti-social and exploitation activities.

''It is, therefore, necessary to check the proliferation of these small roadside temples and also ascertain the antecedents of the people who establish and run these tiny temples," he emphasized.

The circular would be issued directing temple owners to register with the department explaining their activities, he said.

''Muzrai Temples Won’t be Denotified"

The Muzrai minister said there is no proposal before the Government to denotify Muzrai temples in the State.

The Government wants to increase revenue generation of temples by streamlining their management, he said.

There was also no proposal to hand over the Muzrai temples to private parties or mutts.
Instead, the Muzrai Department has received 16 proposals urging the State Government to take over private temples run by some families and trusts, he said.

The Department runs 34,266 temples across the State. Some procedural rules would be drafted soon to follow while opening hundis in temples, he said.

Muzrai Day:

The minister said one day in the year would be celebrated as Muzrai Day and a decision to this effect would be taken soon.

Special programmes would be observed in temples on that day, Poojary said.

Pilgrimage Tours Covering 25 Temples:

The State Government has issued a notification to promote pilgrimage tours covering 25 temples in the State by developing infrastructure.

Each temple will get Rs 1 crore in 2012-13.

The minister said the Department has issued the notification for releasing Rs 1 crore for development of infrastructure at 25 temples.

"These 25 temples in the state will be promoted as pilgrimage tour temples." Annual income of these temples is Rs 25 lakh.

The temples notified for promoting pilgrim tours are:

Zarani Sri Narasimha Temple, Bidar; Yalagoreshwara temple, Bijapur; Maruthi temple, Bagalkote; Sogala Sri Someshwara temple, Belgaum; Shivanasamudra Sri Ranganath, Maramma and other temples, Simsa, Kollegal in Chamarajangar; Sri Halurameshwara temple, Hosadurga, Chitradurga; Sri Doddahotte Ranganath Swamy temple, Holalkere, Chitradurga; Sri Veerabhadraswamy temple, Tarikere, Chikmagalur; Sri Durgamba Temple, Kadur, Chikmagalur; Igguthappa temple, Kodagu; Sri Ramalingeshwara temple, Mulbagal, Kolar; Sri Anjaneya temple, Mulbagal, Kolar; Sri Pateshwara and Byraveshwara temple, Vemagal, Kolar; Sri Kanaka Chalapathi temple, Koppal; Sri Chennakeshava temple, Hassan; Sri Venkataramaswamy temple, Mandya; Sri Amurtheswari temple, Kota, Udupi; Sri Ranganantha Swamy temple, Srirangapatna, Mandya; Sri Vaidanatheshwara temple, T Narasipura, Mysore; Sri Mahishi Mardhini temple, Udupi; Kengal Sri Anjaneya temple, Chennapatna, Ramangaram; Sri Kanakadurgamma temple, Bellary; Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, Tiptur, Tumkur; and Sri Subramanya Swamy temple, Pavagada, Tumkur.

The minister said various development activities, including accommodation, drinking water, toilets, would be provided at the temples to attract more pilgrims.

Tourism information officers would be appointed for all the selected temples.

Two buildings with 200 rooms have been inaugurated recently at Kukke Subramanya temple Dakshina Kannada district, he said.

The Department has planed to tie-up with Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation to arrange special tours to the 25 temples.

The Minister said lands belonged to Muzrai temples would be surveyed to recover encroached lands.

Deputy Commissioners of all the districts concerned and temple management committees have been instructed to conduct the survey.

Officials have also been told to clean lakes and tanks located near temples.

Haradi Rama Ganiga Award:

The Muzai Department would constitute an award with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh in memory of noted Yakshagana artiste Haradi Rama Ganiga.

The award would be presented to a Yakshanaga artiste every year in April/May at a function at Sri Durga Parameshwari temple at Mandarthi in Udupi district.

A committee of experts would select the artiste, he said.

Pointing out that the State Government was aware of the financial difficulties faced by Yakshagana artistes, he said steps would be taken to pay some amount to Yakshagana troupes, who are not financially sound.

Mr. Gladson... don't form impulsive judgement on the things you don't understand. Why do we name our children "god's or prophets" do you know ?? am sure u don't . If you knew it you wouldn't have written filthy comments. Although gods names on commercial activities /business are the names as religious sentiments , ultimately it is disrespected that is what has been discussed . Don't bring political issues in it. Be free from hate, sit quietly at one place and think "do you really wish the bars in the name of god OR " jesus bar"?? or anybody wearing T shirt "I love jesus" and going to brothel. I think if you don't pay respect it is okay. don't disrespect . I had once gone for Easter mass and I was really inspired by the fathers speech. people don't drink for one month and one fine day come to church fully loaded . is that the sacrifice jesus likes? it means the person stopped drinking disrespected son god's words. here also same thing my personal /social affairs shouldn't portray any god or religion . Other day few students so called aiyappa followers protested . is that god wanted them to? students went against dress code of the school. Now before ending let me tell you why people choose gods names for children coz they take gods name , love the children and @ the time of death calling god s name is supposed to be believe as going to heaven. its a belief /sentiments which is not at all wrong. Later the child (person) true is his/name or not is different thing. his/her actions may not necessarily represent the name. think in broader perspective and plz do accept my comments expressed graciously...

Mr. Shrinivas Poojari, kindly recomend removal of images of all national leaders, God Goddesses from Road side, junctions, grounds, public places etc.
Leaders images should find place in Govt. museums and God's may find place in places of worship.
Lot of money is spent/wasted on it to make and then to protect from fights.

I dont understand the phrase "You get what you deserve", this defintely does not hold good when we see our so called rightfully voted leaders. We come from the land which put the foundation for the banking industry and jump started education. Just take a look at this leader all those accolades just falls and then turns in the grave. Are such legislations needed? we are a liberal amalgamate of a society of which we have to take pride. My point here is do we need a government to interfere in the daily routine of a temple. Just imagine if we had invested in roads from Mangalore to Panaji and Bangalore like the Pune -Mumbai expressway, today Mangalore would have been a business hub but that will never happen. We have leaders running their pet projects like these in our tax money to please none. We have educated kids moving to Bangalore or Pune or Chennai to find jobs. It is such a shame that there is no one to think about people who can contribute.

He is perhaps the only minister in Independent India whose face represents his brain. Shakal aur akal dono se bewakoof. Ridiculous ideas flash within the ‘hardware’ fitted on K(h)ota Srinivas Poojary’s (KSP) neck. He needs a thorough ‘formating’ and ‘rebooting’ before the ‘virus’ spreads across and creates more nuisance. He knows that BJP’s govt in Karnataka is already in the ICU and Yeddy might at anytime cut short the oxygen supply. And in the next election, neither the BJP govt will come to power nor will KSP ever be elected as MLA in an election. So he’s hurrying to give shape to his idiotic yet dangerous ideas. He wants to ban naming bars in gods and goddesses’ names, wants to stop printing gods and goddesses’ pictures on T-shirts etc. But this guy has conveniently forgotten that these are not only gods and goddesses’ names but also that of men and women who are living around us. This KSP is dazed with double DSP. What if bar owner’s daughter’s name is Laxmi or Durga or son is Ram or Laxman? He cannot name bar in his son or daughter’s name? What if a person named Shiva, Balaji or Ganesha turns alcoholic? What if a lady named Sita or Saraswati is into flesh trade? Change their names, banish them from the society? Think first about controlling liquor. Alcohol from Sri Venkateshwara Bar is as dangerous as it is from ‘Paradise’ Bar. KSP is telling that just because the whisky is named ‘8 PM’ one should not drink it at 8 AM or 7 PM. We as a society have gradually been turning deaf to listen to our neighbours but want to listen to gods and goddesses through various means. Insult to living humans living around us is permitted but insulting the unseen gods is cardinal sin. Grow up KSP and cheers for one more peg of DSP.

There are lots of other development plans are pending such as clean drinking water in public places, hygienic toilets are badly needed in public places. Good roads and sanitaion is big concern and require immediate attention. Wearing clothes and ornaments is personal choice and freedom. The law need be amended to bring such change and I am sure it is waste of time. It is better ministers contribute their efforts in more sensible manner than depicting religious matters. We are in 21st century?

Dear Ismail Perinje ji....even though the reputation's and attrocities committed by these Rama & dhooma senes does not go with representing the original ideologies or values to be follwed from the lives & preachings of Lord Rama or Shiva, i beleieveits not practicle to stop organization from or a political party to use these names. This is as same as somebody, some individual cannot name thier child Rama or Krishna. If the Govt really intends weather its state or center they can only ban such organizations but i dont think they can stop namming. But about removing Gods images from clothing & other commercial products is really a welcome move.
However i could notice the word "Hindhu Gods" in the above news, this may be debatable, but again in most of the cases as we know companies can get away easily with depicting Hidhu gods as people, I mean hidhus, except these SENES or Dhalas are usually do not mind this or not very fanatic about all these things. However if other community people have issues with same problem about depicting their believed gods or religious practices for commercial purposes they should also apprach the Govt & the Govt should implement impartial law for all.
Anyways good move from the Muzrai Dept.
