The incident took place at around 5.45 am, when Leelavati, Vanaja and Sangeetha were on their morning walk. On the way back towards Sastan, near Kaluvinakatte in Irodi, a speeding Toyota car which was plying from Kundapur rammed into them.

here in india every tom, dick and harry gets a driving licence very easily. there is no traffic sense or lane discipline at all. the authorities should be strict when conducting driving test, impose heavy fines on speeding and drunken driving and for not following lane discipline. Bombay though crowded have fewer accidents. main reasons are the roads in karnataka which are not properly maintained and are without dividers. I hope the RTA wakes up.

    Hi All,
Thanks for the support. Some people here commented about people walking on the roads, in this case they are walking on side of the road, on pedestrian way. The driver was overspeeding, sleeping behind wheels, jumped three pit holes and draged the two ladies more than 5 meters before he stoped his car. Please do not comment if you don't know anything and commenting like you are there at the spot. It hurts a lot for the family as they already lost precious one.

Morning walk on the highway is really dangerous if one does not follow keeping the right side while walking. We shall always remember that the long distance drivers are starving for sleep due to long hours of sleepless drive. Hence due care should be taken and the vehicles facing should be watched while they pass so that one steer clear from being hit by them.

I GO FOR REGULAR MORNING WALK AND BEING A DRIVER AGREE WITH M.N.KAMATH MANGALORE.THE PADESTIANS SHOULD FOLLOW THE BASIC NORMS WHILE WALKING ON ROADS.WHILE WALKING ON THE ROADS AT EARLY MORNING BEFORE SUNRISE AND IN THE EVENINGS SOON AFTER SUNSET WE HAVE TO BE IN WHITE CLOTHS AND BE IN THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR BETTER VISIBILITY TO THE DRIVERS.BLAMING ONLY AT THE DRIVERS MAY NOT BE PROPER....IF THERE WAS CLEAR VISIBLITY THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED.....

It is hoped that when dualisation of NH 66 is completed the number of such accdents will reduce. No progress seen since almost one year in the road construction work. Why the contractors are not taken to task??

    M. N. Kamath - Mangalore

To a certain extent Mr. Kamath, you may be quite right ... but here is the problem. Mangalore regretfully, lacks total infrastructure. Can you tell me where there are adequate walkways for pedestrians to walk safely in and around the metropolis? The walkway spaces meant for pedestrians are regularly gobbled up by two wheelers. Every inch, nook and corner of the road is grabbed up by motorists who think the road is their father’s property and think that by means of dadagiri they can get their demands met. They don't show any apathy towards the common public. Tomorrow these very pedestrian walkways will be grabbed up if the motorists have their say in the name of space crunch. Due to this, there will be a splurge of deadly, aggressive, arrogant and harsh driving resulting in more precious loss of lives and people getting mowed down. Despite this, the motorists will adopt a care-a-damn-attitude and this saga will be an unending one as one has seen in the current year and beyond. Unfortunately, it is not strange that the useless authorities in the name of corruption release approximately 5,000 new vehicles on the road daily, adding up to the burgeoning vehicle populace and thereby burdening the already over-exhausted infrastructure of Mangalore.

This is basically the main reason due to the law that our country has and things are taken for granted with the chaltha hain chalatha hain attitude. Just ponder a while and think how many precious lives have been snuffed out in Mangalore alone due to negligible, irresponsible and harsh driving. One thing is certain .. Mangalore roads are NOT MEANT FOR citizens and commuters, they are meant for Grand Prix or Racing Clubs.

I also go for Morning walk everyday in Mangalore. Some of the drivers drive rashly but one thing that I have noticed is most of the people do not follow basic rules of walking that is Keep to the right side of the road. choose the side where you are facing oncoming traffic. This is so that drivers can see you.Unless you are on a sidewalk separated from the road or a wide bike lane, you should walk in single file. This is especially important on a road with lots curves, where traffic has only a split second chance of seeing you before hitting you.

Not only rash driving walking through the road too can be fatal like this. Every driver should be cautious in his driving that others on the road too will be saved from death. Now not a single day passes by without hearing about an accident. May their souls rest in peace.

So sad to hear the news. Even if you go for a walk there is no guarantee we will come back safely. In Mangalore accidents are very common. Very bad driving. Scary to walk. Government should take very strict action and punish the driver for life. I really pity the family who lost their loved ones. May God give strength and courage to the families and near and dear ones to bear this loss. May their loss Rest in peace.

As always, Mangalore has gone to the dogs. No civic sense can save Mangalore. Arrest the culprit driver and dump him behind bars .. should be hanged or the least possible punishment is he should compensate the victims with blood money as is the case here in the Middle East.

It could be the driver's hangover of drink taken on previous night.

Again, the hands of law for punishing drunk driving is too short. Unless there is stringent law to penalize the rash and drunk driving, this menace to continue.

I pity the family who lost two precious life. Their aim was to be fit but destiny was something else.

May their soul rest in peace.
