Puttur, Jan 3: The elephant that was the centre of attention at Puttur on Tuesday January 1 killed its mahout in the early hours of Thursday January 3.

The deceased mahout has been identified as Chandra (45).

It may be recalled that the elephant, called Laxmisha, had gone wild and tried to attack the driver of the truck in which it was being transported. It could be calmed down only after fire brigade sprayed water on it.

It is said that later, another elephant 'Abhimanyu' was brought to pacify Laxmisha, and was taken back.

In the early hours of Thursday, Laxmisha was being taken to Padil from Darbe via Salamar when the incident took place at Kepulu at around 2 am.

Chandra was walking by the elephant's side, while another mahout, identified as Raviteja, was sitting on its back. All of a sudden, the elephant grabbed Chandra and flung him, which caused his death.

Raviteja jumped off the elephant and managed to escape. He came back after a few minutes and brought the elephant under control and tied it up, hence preventing further tragedy.

More details awaited.

The background of the elephant is not so good. In its young age it has done havoc in Udupi. Due to sudden brake by the driver the elephant has acted like a rogue. After taming and becoming normal they have tried to bring it to Uppinangady. Knowing its tendency and rogue type behavious why the mahout has beaten the elephant continously. So all this has created chaos and nuisance to public and mahout has lost his life unnecessarily. This elephant should be disposed off . Otherwise there will be danger also in future days.

If elephent dies no problem, but the human should not die.

Here the opposite has happened. Human life is most important than the elephant.

People in Southeast Asia and India have been using elephants as workhorses and for transportation for many hundreds of years (I lived there and witnessed it with my own eyes), but that doesn't mean elephants are domestic. There are dozens of reports of these 'tame' elephants killing their life-long trainers, and in zoos and circuses, keepers will almost always explain that elephants are more dangerous than bears, lions, or tigers because of their unpredictable nature.

It is highly uncomfortable for a human being to travel standing in a truck. I can just imagine the situation of that elephant. We train animals to understand us and do our bidding .. accordingly, to a certain extent, it becomes our responsibility to understand them and care for them. The elephant in this case was frightened and it retaliated in the only way it knew how. A poor man lost his life. Pray that his family gets strength to bear this loss.

We have to protect Animals as per wild animal act.
Where is animal protection activities now? Where is Cow protection team?
Elephant is not equal to Cow?
Need to protect all Elephants from all temples and leave them back to Forest.
Why the government allowing this to happen?
Animals are forest friendly not temple friendly.

Prayers to the departed soul. I guess we fail to realize that the elephant is being tortured by making it stand on a open lorry in the hot sun . Elephants have very sensitive skin , this could be a reason for it to be irritated . Traveling long distance on a open lorry is a real torture for any one . But we fail to understand that animals too feel the pain . don’t we !!!

Sad incident, May GOD give strength to Mahout's family to bear the loss of life!
Some times animals turn cruel to people, like dog biting, snakes biting and attacks by Cheetah etc. and some times people are very cruel to animals.
All acts of cruelty to animals should be prevented. Live and let live is best policy!
However, God created animals, fruits, vegetables, Sea food etc. for people so peoples safety is first and foremost.

    May his soul RIP.
First of all Elephant usage for Pulling , loading and transporting of Wood should be banned..
Also elephants must be specially cared in Temples and holy places.
Public should understand that elephants are getting irritated when they see crowd. So always avoid crowd in front of Elephants.

We must stop harassing animals. The elephants required to be kept in peaceful atmosphere far from human beings. Often we see elephants being paraded on the public area and indulge in various acts as people feed them and incite anger. We must put an end to all these gimmicks. Let the animals live on their own in their free world(jungle).

It is high time that we stop catching, taming and using elephants for any and all purposes. Olden days they were very much required by the kings for their armies, temples and for heavy manual work. In modern times this has become a nuisance. Huge maietenance, perpetual risk for the mahouts and unnecessary torture for the animals. Poor guy, the mahout also is a human being and has a family. This incident is a wake up call for all of us.
