Yeshwantpur Express Derails Near Sakleshpur - Trains Cancelled

Daijiworld Media Network - Sakleshpur

Update: January 5

Sakleshpur, Jan 4: Mangalore-Bangalore trains have been stopped due to breaking of the rail track between Sakeleshpur and Subramanya, which caused Yeshwanthpur Express to Kannur (train no 16517) under Mysore division to derail at a forest area near Kadagarahalli on Friday January 4 early morning.

As reported earlier, the railway department has cancelled Yeswantpur-Kannur Express (16517) of January 4 between Sakleshpur and Kannur (partially), Mangalore Central-Karwar Express (16523) of January 4, Karwar-Mangalore Central Express (16524), Kannur-Yeswantpur Express (16518) of January 4, Yeswantpur-Karwar Express (16515) of January 4 and Karwar-Yeswantpur Express (16516) of January 5.

Mangalore CPI (M) leader K R Sriyan, one of the passengers in the stranded train, said the incident took place inside the tunnel. "There was no light for four hours. We spent those four hours in darkness. We could not get in touch with our families either, as there was no mobile network," he said.

"The accident occured at around 5 am, and until 9 am we were stranded in the same spot. An engine then arrived from Arsikere and pulled back our bogies. We reached Sakleshpur and travelled by bus from Sakleshpur to Mangalore. We were supposed to reach our destination by 8.30 am by train, but the incident delayed us by several hours and we finally reached Mangalore at 3 pm," he said.

Another CPM leader B Madhava who was also in the train missed his flight to Hyderabad, while Saiprasad Shetty and Devika missed a marriage function.

Driver's presence of mind

Sriyan said that the passengers were lucky to escape a major tragedy, as the train would have fallen into a gorge if it had moved a little further.

It is the the engine driver's presence of mind that saved the lives of thousands, as, sensing danger ahead, he brought the train to a halt at the right moment.

There is a railway bridge soon after the tunnel. If not for the driver's timely action, the train may have fallen into the 200-metre deep gorge under the bridge. The engine which derailed moved a little ahead and stopped at the end of the bridge, and the bogies, except one, remained safe.

The passengers were later provided bus transport to reach their destinations. However, some complained that there were no arrangements made to take them to the bus stand from Sakleshpur railway station where they were taken first. Many passengers had to walk with their luggages to the bus stand, or take lifts from vehicles passing by.

As a result of the derailment, the following trains have been cancelled:

Train number 16517 Yeswantpur – Kannur Express of January 4 has been partially cancelled between Sakleshpur and Kannur.

Train number16523 Mangalore Central – Karwar Express of January 4 has been cancelled.

Train number16524 Karwar – Mangalore Central Express and Train number16518 Kannur – Yeswantpur Express of January 4 have been cancelled for want of rakes.

Train number16515 Yeswantpur – Karwar Express of January 4 and Train number16516 Karwar – Yeswantpur Express of 5th January 2013 have been cancelled for want of rakes.

Last month keralites have added 3 more coaches to this train making the total number of kannur coaches to 8 from initial 5. I feel this is the reason for derailing. Railway safety commission had said that it is not feasible to add more coaches to this train considering the safety factors in the ghat section. The officials who have increased the coaches should be kicked out immediately. Because of their greedy and self-centric attitude, passengers are at risk!

Last but not least: All coaches should ply to Karwar without splitting in Mangalore. Only nearly 50 people travel in Kannur route.

Many may recall that there was an article in Daijiworld stating that the number of boggies of this train would be increased Test run woud be conducted and then higher speed would be put into practice.
I had written my opinion at that time saying that tests are always done at 150% or 200% criticality condition and not at 100% criticality. Running an empty train at "working speed" is not a standard test. It has to be a fully loaded train trial at 150% speed. This type of derailings will continue to happen if the momentum of the train (speed X mass) increases.
This matter needs to be taken up with safety department of Railways who can understand the technicality. There are many other variables which need to beconsidered in addtion to speed.
Let Railways take up such issues seriously and not merely go by politician's desire of having faster and longer trains.

I was a passenger in this train. I was in AC coach and it was outside the tunnel along with another compartment and 3 engines. My observations:
1.Safety drill/procedure - Nothing exists from passenger view. I came to know about derailment my word of mouth. I am sure passengers in the compartments which were inside tunnel were made aware of the situation, much later as I didnt see many of them coming forward and checking the scene till way past day break.
2.The route is scenic. But there is no mobile connectivity/signal on the route, No access to road(for rescue actions), All support have to come from big stations (Hassan/Arasikere/Mangalore) which were at least 3-4 hours away. Walking on the track is dangerous as this is a forest area. So it is better to avoid traveling in this train during night, till railways implement safety procedures for passengers.
    4. Few simple facilities to be implemented in all trains like - instructions on dos/donts in case of accident, first aid kits, Inter/Intra compartment communication (from driver/gaurd to passenger) so that passengers are aware of what is happening and can be given right instructions in case of emergency.

I will not definitely travel in this route in near future

This derailment because of faulty track, could also have been the work of naxalites, right? Isn't it suspicious that the derailment took place inside a tunnel, just before a bridge, and in heavily forested area?

    Something does not look right...

The plan for Bangalore to Mangalore train was started after independence. But it took shape to lay meterguage train in 1970 finally it train started to chug along western beautiful ghats in 1979. But within 15 years i.e. by 1994 tracjs were removed to make way for broadguage throwing Rs 200 crore into dust. Had they thought of making provision for Broadguage bridge and tunnel there would have been saving of Rs 1000 crore during guage conversion. When the train 6517/6518 Bangalore ti Mangalore was started on 7 DEC 2007 it had total 2 AC coaches, 9 Sleeper coaches and 3 General coaches. It was appreciated by all and made dream of coastal people a truth But later it was extended to Kannur at insistence of MoS railway E Ahmed of Kerala though it was found infeasible, loss making. It was supposed to extend to Karwar But our bad luck, Our MPs like Oscar, Kateel, DV Hegde, Kageriand Poojari kept mum. When a demand by Mangaloreans was made to increase number of coaches to 18 railway officilas of Palghat say it was technically unfit. Kannur people have other train Yesvantpur to kannur no: 16527/16528 started in April 2003 as weekly and later made daily in 2007 which is quicker and profit making . After Mr Bhat and others went to Court aginst extension of Night train to Karwar, Court took them to task. Then Railway officials woke up and made arrangement in October 2012. It is decided to run train with 18 coaches from bangalore to mangalore night rly and bifurcate at Mangalore 12 coaches to Karwar and 5 coaches to Kannur. It is technically unfit to increase number of coaches beyond 16 in Ghat section. But Again Railways officials at Palghat added more coaches for Kannur bound rakes which isunnecessary. This is why mishap. At Mangalore plenty of trains are available to travel to kannur. And day train Yesvantpur to Karwar is started but it is triweekly. It should be made dialy.

Or another suggestion would be to cancel the newly added train to Karwar and let the old status quo remain. Thus there is a train to Kannur and no train to Karwar

It is high time that railways consder of introducing day time train, between Mangalore and Bangalore via Arsikere, to save time and fare. Even night train service can be routed from Karwar to Yeshwanthpur via Arsikere than through Mysore which involves time and higher fare.

Passengers safety should never be compromised at any cost!
Demand of more coaches should be considered only if technically feasible. Passengers demand shouldn't be the sole criteria to increase the coaches! To whom it will serve?
