Mangalore, Jan 5: An awareness programme condemning violence against women and discussions on tackling such crimes were held at St Agnes College auditorium on Saturday January 5.

A programme was also held to pay homage to the women who have been victims of various forms of violence, atrocities and injustice.

A protest rally was organized prior to the programme. Audio-visual presentation and dance portraying tragic incidents in the lives of women were the highlights of the programme. Through dialogues, debates and a karate demonstration, attempts were made to find solutions for the problems concerning women.

The main highlights of the programme was a panel discussion, with inputs given by advocate Asha Nayak, social activist Vidya Dinker, student council president Falen Lasrado, and others on legal rights and empowerment of women. Dr Geralyn Pinto, HOD, PG department of English, was as the moderator.

During the discussion, Asha Nayak said that criminals and rapists have been escaping punishment due to lack of evidence. In this regard, the victims need to take a strong stand and do everything possible to bring the perpertrators to justice.

"The girl victim should contact the nearest hospital immediately if she has been physically or sexually abused. She should also preserve the clothes she was wearing at the time of the incident, which can be produced as evidence in court. Above all, she should contact the nearest police station immediately," she said.

"Even though it may be difficult for the victim to describe in the court the trauma she has undergone, it is necessary that she explains. At the same time, the judge, prosecutor and lawyers should understand her position and not be prejudiced," she said.

Vidya Dinker said that though the country's judicial sytem is strong, the laws are not implemented properly. "Public awareness on laws and judicial system are essential to tackle crime in the country," she said.

Dr Devi Prabha said that women face many problems right from womb to tomb, that is, from birth to death. "The number of rapes and assaults on women has been increasing at an alarming rate and it is high time to rise and fight against such issues," she added.

A signature campaign was also launched on the occasion.

Songs and skits added more meaning to the programme.

Malini Hebbar compered and Agneta Aiman proposed the vote of thanks.

    Well done Staff and students of St. Agnes College. Awareness and preparedness can reduce evil in our Society. When students join together for a cause the impact on society is great. Let our country let to respect everyone specially our women.Let us learn from our Scriptures how women were treated with dignity and honour by the Prophets. Keep doing programmes in the college where critical thinking is encouraged.

    First and foremost the television, print media and the Billboards should stop projecting women as sex commodities. Women are shown in semi nude or exposed condition everywhere to incite passion and lust which is vented on innocent girls elsewhere. We do not hear much of a muslim women being raped why? The reason is they do not expose their bodies. I believe the society should ban films, television, billboards, magazines etc projecting women as sex symbols. Once this is done a lot good will be done to our women folks. Women on their part should dress modestly and stop over exposing of their bodies. We should first find the reason for the rapes taking place rather than looking for capital punishments to the culprits. Everywhere we see sexual perversion whether on the street, place of work, at home or also in high places. Women are not spared. People look at them as sex symbols to be used as this mindset has been created in the minds of the public. This includes both the uneducated as well as the educated, rich or poor. After the advertisements and television has increased so are the rape cases, sexual harassment and all forms of sexual perversions. Who is to blame for this we should first find and close those areas only then we can talk about the safety of women in public life. Trying to treat the symptoms of the disease will not do rather go to the root of the disease and eradicate it so that it does rise up again.

    @Farooq.
    we guys are no one to tell a woman what to wear. what a woman wears is her own personal choice. if by covering up there would be no rapes then rapes would be non-existent in muslim countries. but muslim nations such as egypt have the highest incidents of eve-teasing and rape though their women are fully covered up.
    the mentality of men needs to change for rapes to end. today we would tell women to cover up tomorrow we may say women not to leave their homes. all this would never end.

    My Dear Sister, I heartly apologize for the injustice happening in our country. But to be honest just imagine the reason behind continuity of the incidence (RAPE) in India..The only reason is physical expose..I understand tat ur statement " Hamare kapde nahi Aapke soch badlo". But its not completely true..you have to accept the reality tat 99% of the rape took place only bcos of exposed body..Even you all also know this itself is the fact. Since India has very huge number of population majority you can find illiterate and uncultured and this act is done by those illiterate goons..So I kindly request all my sisiters to cover their body to the max they can n we can definately come over this issue gradually.

    Among the entire placard displayed by our sisters, “Hang the Rapist” message is the only solution for averting such heinous crimes. Entire nation vented its anger following the Delhi incident but Delhi continued to witness similar incidents together with other atrocities occurring at different parts of our country. Law should act quickly and unanimously resolution should be passed for saving our better half of the society and letting them to live with honor and peace.
