AZ beat PSV in Dutch Cup final

Rotterdam, May 10 (IANS): AZ Alkmaar captured the Dutch Cup football title, beating PSV Eindhoven 2-1 in the final here.

Midfielder Adam Maher and striker Jozy Altidore have been the most important AZ players this season, and they proved their status once again in the final here Thursday night, reports Xinhua.

Maher finished a solo effort, with the PSV defense only walking backwards, in the 12th minute. After a pass by Viktor Elm, Altidore doubled the scoring two minutes later.

AZ led 2-1 at half-time. In the second half, PSV did create chances, with Jeremain hitting the post in one of the final minutes. However, AZ managed to hold on to the lead.

AZ grabbed the Dutch Cup for the fourth time in history. The Alkmaar based side previously won in 1978, 1981 and 1982. They only lost in 2007, against Ajax.

For coach Gertjan Verbeek it was the first prize in his coaching career. For PSV the defeat meant the eighth defeat in seventeen finals. No club has lost so many Dutch Cup finals as PSV, followed by Ajax and HBS with each five lost cup finals.
