Outsiders in Karnataka should learn Kannada: Siddaramaiah

Outsiders in Karnataka should learn Kannada: Siddaramaiah

Bangalore, Nov 1 (PTI): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said outsiders settled in Karnataka should learn local language Kannada and decried that English education system had been reduced to a commercial activity.

"Outsiders who have come and settled here have to learn the local language Kannada. It is necessary to learn local culture and language when you are utilising all the facilities from the state and reaping its benefits," said Siddaramaiah at a function organised by the state government to celebrate Karnataka's 58th "Rajyotsava" (state formation day).

At the event, Siddaramaiah said that the government would not close any Kannada schools.

"Let there be inadequate strength or any other reason, we will not close any Kannada-medium school and this is our firm stand. We will improve and develop facilities at government schools so as to create an atmosphere wherein our children will want to join them," Siddaramaiah said.

Admitting that one reason why people at large had disregard towards Kannada schools was due to the way the public education system functions, he said, "Our government has decided to take steps towards improving the quality of education in those schools."

"Unless we bring in positive changes in the way our government schools function, people will not show interest towards Kannada medium education system and they will get carried away by English medium schools," he added.

Siddaramaiah said, "Imposing any particular language or stopping any one from learning other languages is wrong. At a stage of life, our children should be provided an opportunity to select their medium of instruction, but until then it is good to provide education to them in their mother tongue."

He also said: "it is true that English is the world language, but it cannot be self imposed blindly as the language is being today learnt to reflect one's status, to add to that such is also the education provided by our English schools- which is impractical."

".... Let me reiterate we are not against English language rather our government advocates teaching of English as a language from first standard onwards."

Expressing his concern that English education system is turning out to be a business today, Siddaramaih said "No one is concerned about teaching English that is of quality and result oriented. Language has to be taught as per requirement and necessity, literature has to be taught to ones who have opted for it," he added.

He said there was a misconception that advanced science cannot be taught in other languages except English- "such thinking is impractical, we have several great scientists like CNR Rao and thinkers whose medium of instructions was their mother tongue Kannada."

While Karnataka Rajyotsava was celebrated with fervor across the state, protest marred the celebrations in Belgaum- the border district of Karnataka. Here, Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) observed it as a black day, demanding integration of Belgaum into Maharashtra.

MES leaders and followers organised a protest march and bike rally, wearing black dress and holding black flags.

No sir, you are wrong. More than 65% of the people in Bangalore are Kannadigas. Many Kannadigas especially Bangalore natives speak either English or Hindi outside and also hard to find if they are natives by looks. Maybe that gives an impression as if outsiders are more.

Seriously what is the point of knowing kannada? If you go to any interview in a corporate office setup anywhere in india, mostly the interview is in english. I doubt it is even in hindi. That shows english is more important than kannada or tulu (except while dealing with lesser educated people and/or going to shops to buy goods or to the fish market and bargaining with fisherwomen we need to know tulu / kannada).

As Indians The national language Hindi must be compulsory in school. Our identity as Indian as HINDI. Also Indian states are divided according to the languages of all states. If we want to keep tradition and culture Kannada language also to be studied at least the Kannadigas and others also adopt. It is encouraged to at least speak when people from Karnataka meet anywhere in India and abroad. Even though the education gives importance to English nowardays the old generation studied in Kannada medium

Indians in general are very sensitive about their identity.
A north Indian will always recommend hiring of a north Indian and so also with south Indian. An exception to this rule is the well meaning Kannadigas. We don't mind hiring Malayalis, Tamilians or Andhrites but when it comes to Kannadigas, our criteria is very different. He should be very submissive, always thankful, and probably even teach his offspring that their life's defining moment was the hiring of their father by another Kannadiga.
While hiring the right people for the position in hand is need of the organization, North Indians who are currently occupying important positions in various organizations are also responsible for creating a skewed list of top institutions from where one can hire. End result, more north Indians are hired at the expense of south Indians. Sensing this potential problem that could result in social issues, some steps should have been taken at the outset. Infact CIA in one of its report has already predicted as one of the impending problems that India will have to face.
Siddu now insisting to learn Kannada will only contribute to making this problem even more grave much ahead of its time. Rather than insist on North Indians settling here to learn Kannada (I know many North Indians who have spent last 15 years in Bangalore think that it is a ridiculous that they have to learn Kannada)he would be better off, levying a small tax on companies hiring north Indians to make up for lost opportunities of Kannadigas. This tax could be wavied off, if North Indians clear the Kannada test that should be taken every 5 years once they clear that test the first time. I bet they are lazy enough to give up and just pay the tax.

Learn Kannada doesn't mean, stop learning English or disrespect Hindi. Tulu,Kodava,Badaga are not different languages from Kannada, they are indeed different types of Halegannada (old Kannada). So our main language is Kannada. What is wrong in propagating it to people who come from outside. By learning, they will also feel the respect towards locals and locals will feel oneness with them.

Kannada as a language is rich in grammar, phonetics, and covers every range of sound produced through human throat, mouth, tongue n breath. Kannada literature is no less than any language in the world. Historically it is one of the oldest n evolved languages. Its literature n forms of expressions span depth n width of thought process. Kannada as a language can bring out effectively our thought process in coherent n articulative manner. To express our thought process we need a sound language. It also has to be a good communicator. People should pay attention to evolution of the language. Creating new words or grammatic structures will make a language rich.

Today, most of scholars in kannada are busy in deciphering some learned texts written many centuries ago by wise people who could produce masterful work way back in history. Any language will attract people if it is open and enriched constantly with time. This productive evolution by adding words etc. is very important for making sure language doesnt become part of museum. Present day, kannada is goin through a delicate phase where the native speakers of kannada are unwilling to speak. It is sad that some external force has to be applied for saving kannada language n culture. Instead of enforcing kannada on non-speakers of kannada, it is better to instill pride among native kannadigas. People who are old cannot be open to change. It is better to instill pride among kids at school level itself. Instead of blaming people for not talking kannada, lets ask what measures taken to implement process of knowing kannada/culture ? If kids are not exposed to good kannada n its culture, no point in crying foul. Are we exposed to reading kannada news papers, novels, literature, texts, poetry, n other forms of cultural activities ? Technical or professional education cannot be imparted in Kannada bcz people have not worked to add words n produce knowledge sources. For time bein we need to study in English after 10th.

An excellent speech on the Rajyotsava day ,CM Sir.India is a linguistic state and every state has his local language.Every state sticks on to their state language whereas Karnataka has become a multi linguistic state.I congrtulate the Kannadigas for their excellence in learning different languages. So also the outsiders who step into our state should learn our beautiful language kannada.Kannada naadinalli Kannada Basheyannu kaliyiri. Ee Naadu Kannada, Ee Haadu Kannada,....
The lovers of other languages may move back to their own linguistic state rather than demanding integration and protesting. Let them live peacefully in their state and allow us to live peacefully.

How the politicians get into unnecessary subjects is a mysterious
parody. It is good to learn a language but when the politicians try to enforce any language upon the residents of that State of nation as a prerequisite, then the politicians are going overboard. How the politicians in Delhi tried their best to eradicate English and to impose Hindi all over India? If I am living in north India, to survive, I will be forced learn Hindi. Politicians need not have to create language bewilderment.

These MES people never learn in life. They are born to create problems. They should understand 50% of Solapur population is Kannadigas and 30% Kolhapur district population is Kannadigas. There are good number of Kannadigas in Latur and Satara Districts. These population are not the migrated ones. While drawing a border line between two states, it is impossible to identify and separate all Kannada, Marathi speaking towns.

If you consider the migration, in Mumbai there are 25-30 Lakhs Kannadigas and Pune has 10 Lakhs Kannadigas.

Ignorance from both Govt and People are the reason for Kannada's present situation. Whatever rule Govt brings in, the end users are people of state. Kannada should be in the lips of Kannadigas. When Kannadigas does not have interest to speak Kannada, what is the use of blaming Govt?

The same way Govt is also responsible.

I went to an RTO office in Bangalore 3 years back. The application form was in Kannada. The very next month I visited RTO office in Udupi. The application form in English..!

Go to Bescom website, it is full Kannada website. Visit Mescom webiste, it is english website. My question to govt is when Mangalore/Udupi/other secondary cities becomes like another Bangalore, will you enforce Kannada? By that time we will lose everything. Don't you think it is your duty to enforce kannada from the beginning itself?

As mentioned by Veerappa. D.N., Madikeri, most of Kannadiga IT women (say around 65%) does not prefer Kannada. They teach English to kids, especially Bangalore/Mysore people. They think speaking english is the prestige though they don't have anything in their brain.
