Mangalore, Nov 2: A shop selling crackers was completely gutted in a fire in the wee hours of Saturday November 1. The shop was located near Kadri Rotary office.

The shop, named Madhusudan, is owned by Rajesh.

It is said that Rajesh had just set up the shop the same day to sell crackers for Diwali.

It is learnt that the fire sparked off after an unidentified person threw some object into the shop. It is suspected that it was a deliberate act.

A worker had slept in the shop, but he escaped the fire unhurt.

The crackers in the shop burst one after the other, gutting the entire shop. The people in the vicinity had a sleepless night due to the continuous sound made by the crackers, locals said.

A person in an adjacent cracker shop ran to safety as soon as he heard the noise, it is learnt. No injuries were reported, however, an Activa scooter, furniture and generator were gutted.

The Pandeshwar and Kadri fire service rushed to the spot and doused the fire. The chief fire officer on duty was K Nagesh, assisted by S Gowda, Vasanth and other fire officers and personnel.

These shops are set up next to Bus stops. Imagine if this accident should have happened during busy hours, what would have been the end result. Few years back these shacks were touching the Bus stand in Nanthoor. I have met then D.C. and requested to move the shops far away from the stand and DC ordered the move and thus the shops are staying away farther. They are claiming that someone throw something into the shop. Worker was sleeping and who saw this incident. I suspect that hot emissions coming from Generator ignited the fire crackers.

Though this can be passed off as an isolated incident, these cracker shops are ticking time bombs. The City Corporation gives permission to sell crackers in open grounds, but does not bother to scrutinise safety compliance. There is a row of cracker shops in front of Kankanady Market, but I haven't seen any fire safety measures around.
