1.34 lac Indians return, Govt watching situation in Saudi Arabia

New Delhi, Nov 5 (PTI):
With 1.34 lakh Indian workers already returning to the homeland, Government is closely watching the situation in Saudi Arabia which is targeting illegal foreigners under its new labour policy, Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi today said.

Asked about the drive in Saudi Arabia under which foreigners who have not corrected labour and residency status under its new labour policy - Nitaqat - are being deported, Ravi said that till now no incident of harassment of Indian nationals has been reported.

"The issue in Saudi Arabia has already been taken up. So far they have not entered into any house for checking. Saudi Arabian government has given specific instructions not to harass people but to check properly and not enter any house," Ravi told reporters at the sidelines of an event.

He said those Indians who are coming back as they are unable to stay there, are also given assistance by  the ministry.

"1.34 lakh Indians have already come back from Saudi Arabia," Ravi said.

He said India is closely watching the situation and in touch with various associations as well. The embassy is very actively assisting in case of any problem, he added.

Saudi Arabia has launched a strict inspection campaign to target illegal foreign workers after the seven-month grace period ended on Sunday. The campaign is expected to continue throughout the year and there is no time limit set for it.

Asked if the move will adversely effect India's remittances, Ravi said that a delegation from the ministry has already gone to Saudi Arabia and has discussed the issue."I was in touch with them. They went in April and also gave suggestions. That is why there are no complaints of harassment to Indians being made. They are checking, listing and people are coming back. This is going on," said Ravi.

He said the number of Indians there has gone up from 2.4 million to 2.8 million. "But there are some people without proper documents and they will send them back. My ministry is in touch with the ambassador and we are providing all the help they want."

Asked whether Indians are being targeted abroad, Ravi said, "One cannot make such a general statement.

"There will be some issues here and there, some in the Gulf countries as the employment question comes in. Indians are not targeted and that is why no such serious complains have come to us."

    Mr. Ramakrishna,
Don't comment like an alien, if this many people are coming back then it's a concern for them and the nation.
I know you can't change the things here but at least you can refrain from silly comments.

SAG had given ample grace time for these illegal workers hailing from around the world to correct and set straight their residency papers. However, it looks like most of these people are runaways from original sponsors or were taken a job on Qafalat. With the new regulations, Nitaqat, the so called illegal immigrants are the filtered one and have no option to regularize or legalize their residency but to return home. This was expected.

Now how can we help them when they return to India. Definitely, India has lots of opportunities provided these people are ready to shed their egos and tantrums and willing to work with the same level of spirit and diligence as they work in Gulf countries.

We have lots of demand for Carpenters, Masons, Plumbers, Electricians, Painters, Technicians, Mechanics, Drivers and so on. And in these days, their wages are very high too. But the problem is that our people are ready to do any job abroad, without even a day off, but unfortunately not in India.

What the nonsense these people are telling let the Indian government arrange a job for these 1.34 lakh people those who came back from Saudi Arabia on urgent basis. Let Indian government first understand how the illegal workers emerge simple reason first of all most of the overseas recruiting agents are cheating (promising good salary in India but the employer is paying only SAR 700 per month) secondly employer also harassing, torturing etc. etc. ultimately these illegal workers are escaping from their employers and working illegally in and around Saudi Arabia.

One more thing I noticed most of the overseas recruiting agents are not sighing the agreement contract in India agreement contract was signed in Saudi Arabia, if the agreement signed in India and if employer cheats then the employee can move to Saudi labor court. What we are practicing is utter nonsense Indian government should take steps for such things and Indian government should fix the minimum of the salary (basic salary SAR 1200) other Indian government should not send lesser than that. The Indian government is sending the people like animals. We cannot expect much from the Indian Consulate/Embassy.

Indian government or officials hardly doing anything for blue collar workers working in gulf countries, the shameless ministers including vailyar ravi normaly visits the gulf country and their regular tune requesting business class peoples to invest in India, but what about daily wages peoples called laborer, there is no scheme or insurance which will benefit for them once they are back home, what all they need is voting rights as N.R.I, once they get that politician come to their kneels, otherwise who bothered about sudden job loss, discrimination at work place, increased suicide rate among Indian working in gulf countries

Out of the $ 69 billion remitted by the Indians working abroad/year, mainly from the Gulf countries, 27% of the remittance is from the residents of Kerala. 1.34 lakh Indians and much more in the days ahead will create dual problem. Less foreign remittance and creating jobs for them at home.
The State of Kerala will be affected far worse than any other State in India.

1.34 lakh Indians returning back jobless from Saudi Arabia is REALLY A SHOCKING FIGURE!
Governments should VERY SERIOUSLY consider employment generating avenues like infrastructure development to tide over the employment crisis!
It is not a minor issue!

Authorities must look into avoiding incidents as happened a few years back, where agents helped several non-Indians to migrate to India under Nitaqat using temporary passport provided by Indian consulates .
