Kundapur/Bhatkal, Nov 26: Drivers of private buses in Kundapur brought their buses to a standstill on Tuesday November 26 protesting against an assault on one of their colleagues.

It is said that APM bus that had started from Bhatkal, at 5.15 pm on Monday, November 25 and driven by Shikaripura Hosanagara resident Nityananda alias Narasimha Murthy collided against a bike at Sarpanakatte, damaging it.

The bus driver and the bike rider had a discussion and decided for an amicable settlement. However the bike rider had informed his friends during the accident and the ones who came to the spot argued with the driver and allegedly assaulted him.

The driver who was seriously injured was rushed to a hospital in Kundapur where the doctors advised shifting him to Manipal hospital. Nithyananda suffered injuries all over his body including his chest, it is learnt.

Following the incident, private buses in Kundapur taluk went on a voluntary bandh and shut down their  services in places like Kundapur, Bhatkal, Kollur and other areas.

The bus drivers then submitted a petition to the deputy commissioner through police sub inspector Jayarama D Gowda urging him to arrest the guilty and take action against them. They warned that their agitation would continue if the culprits are not arrested.

Bus agent Shankera Kharvi who spoke on the occasion said that the drivers who work for minimum wages are being targeted for undue harassment. Though there is provision for legal action for mistakes committed by the drivers, some people take law into their hands. The drivers and conductors face continuous harassment. Very poor people take up such employment and there is no protection for them, he lamented. More than 200 drivers and conductors participated in the protest.

Students, office-goers and general public had to face incovenience as the strike was unannounced.

Government buses used the situation to their advantage. Four Rajahamsa buses ply from Kundapur to Udupi with minimum ticket fare of Rs 50. Two more red buses were put into service like local buses on usual rates. Bus service except in Gangolli, Kolluru, Siddapura and Kamalashile got badly affected.

Meanwhile, Bhatkal private bus drivers submitted a memorandum to the assistant commissioner of Bhatkal Korma Rau, demanding the arrest of the people who assaulted the driver.

A complaint was filed by the bus conductor against the assaulters, in which he named Vishwanatha Vaman Acharai, Lokesh Naik, Ganesh Naik, Hanunath Naik and others.

A case has been registered at Bhatkal rural police station.

it is a lesson to the bus driver, My dear drivers please tell me your owners paying you may be 500 rupees per day, you have at home your family like wife children, mother and father also brothers and sisters. but when you hit the other vehicle and third person is died, what about their family, your owner is going to pay them for a life time? Please think all drivers about this and go for driving.

Well done public. These drivers who drive big vehicles especially bus, trucks, 4 wheel vehicles do not care for other vehicles nor the pedestrians.

Even though I do not approve the citizens taking the law into their hands, unless there is a strong protest by the locals, this type of careless driving will not stop.

These bus drivers driving the buses so carelessly & harshly, so they doesn't want to miss the passenger to get in to their bus. So many accidents happened between kundapur to mangalore. It is good happened that in Bhatkal the locals beaten up the driver. It could happened something wrong if he continuously overtaking the bus.

time to replace these private busses with govt busses. these private bus drivers think the road is only for them and have no way for others on the road. the cleaner of the bus thinks he is the owner and thinks he has the right to abuse each and every one on the road or in the bus. express bus drivers think they are on the highway even inside the city. they wait as long as the want (paje) in some bus stands and then run after that as if something would happen if they went slow. over and above this , the timekeepers, first of all the bus is late and the occupants have to reach their destination on time - who the hell is the time keeper to detain the bus for the bus for the next 5 or 10 minutes. and then after that again the drivers run with the bus with his life. when all this happens - the funny thing is , everyone sits quietly (shame on all of us). all wrong this are done by only 5 out of 100 in society , but still the remaining 95 keep quiet. mera desh mahan

Time for government to seriously thinking about getting more n more government buses to DK & Udupi districts .

This is open goondaism of bus drivers , first of all they drive very rashly and when correct treatment is given to them they go on strike.

Time for government to teach these bus goondas a correct lesson , so that they never go on strike again and paralyse life of normal people.
