Belgaum: 335 girls went missing from DK in 3 years: Legislature committee

Belgaum, Nov 27 (DHNS): The Legislature Committee on Women and Child Welfare in its report has sought a high-level inquiry into the large number of girls going missing from Dakshina Kannada district during the last three years.

The report of the committee headed by Congress MLA T Shakuntala Shetty was tabled in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. The report reveals that as many as 335 girls went missing from Dakshina Kannada district alone during the last three years and the local police had failed to investigate the matter.

The committee said all the incidents of suicide, murder, rape, kidnapping and atrocities committed against women in the district should be probed.  A toll-free helpline facility for women and senior citizens should be extended throughout the State, it has recommended.

The panel has taken exception to funds remaining unutilised in various labour welfare boards, including the Karnataka State Labour Welfare Board, Karnataka Construction Workers’ Labour Welfare Board, among others. It has stated that the Labour department has not put in any efforts to get members registered to the welfare boards.

Lapses in the functioning of the department had been pointed out by a previous legislature committee. However, the department had taken no steps to rectify the lapses, the panel stated. It has also suggested amendments to the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act for effective implementation of the legislation.

The Committee has recommended that licences of drug stores selling substandard medicines should be cancelled and criminal cases be booked against their owners. The committee, in an inspection drive, found poor quality medicines in several shops in 10 districts, the report stated.

It is most unfortunate that D.K. is becoming Universal unsafe district. The police have no time to search for the missing children/girls as they are busy in arranging security for VIPs and V VIPs!

In the Cases of missing girls the Police are so careless and arrogant and when any one go to the Police station to file complaint about missing girl of their family, the ready-made answer of Police Inspector is that - " she must have eloped with some boy, don't worry she will come back after a few days. If she does not come after a week then come and lodge complaint officially".
So, a separate ladies Police wing should be formed for tracing missing girls in the District, who should investigate exclusively about such cases only.

@Ravi Shenava, Separate Ladies Police Station is alright. But dont inform about it to N D Tivari of Cong. Because if he comes to know about the same, that 85 year old young man will visit the Ladies police station in the middle of night, as he has done the same in Lucknow now.

This is serious issue. How we can bare any one of our family member missing. Can a minister explain to public how many cases complaints have been lodged and police not registered complained or police failed to take action. Cases where the compalints not lodged. All people need to unite and fight against evil and it is not the time to blame one onother.

Oh! It is a alarming situation. We need to feel shame ourselves in such a educated district like us. Our religious and social leaders need to come to together and discuss about this social structure. It is not the right thing to blame only at our Government. It is better to have monthly reviews on this kind of cases. Further there may be many more cases which did not come to light.

Honestly out of the 335 think 300 are 'Lagori Cases' where girls allow themselves to be lured and something like that...At such age the urge to play 'Lagori' is immense and boys as usual take advantage...
These cases can also termed 'Miss
    Sing'cases...
The other 35 however have different stories as the main cause....

335 girls missing in 3 years only from DK? Almost 1 girl missing every 3rd day! Why 335, even if one girl is missing, the authorities should go all out to trace her. The people in turn also report to the police, immediately when they suspect a new girl in their locality. Imagine the trauma of the parents. They are not sure of the fate of their beloved daughters.
