Mangalore, Nov 28: Rashid Malbari, said to be an aide of underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel, was granted bail by the second additional district court here on Thursday November 28.

Malbari was lodged in Mangalore jail since 2009. In August this year, he was convicted of possessing illegal arms and sentenced to five years in prison. However, by then he had already spent four-and-a-half years in jail.

In October, he was granted interim bail, but he continued to remain in custody as he was charged in other cases too.

The court on Thursday granted him bail in the case relating to lawyer Harish Rai, wherein Malbari was charged under section 120B of the Arms Act. However, he will continue to remain in custody as he has other cases against him, including one in the high court.

Malbari and his gang were arrested at Chattanchal, Kasargod on March 29, 2009 by the DCIB police led by inspector H N Venkatesh Prasanna. The police had seized an 9 mm pistol and ammunitions from the gang. He was said to be assigned the task of killing Varun Gandhi back then. The police had said that he was was part of the gang that fired on Dawood's rival Chhota Rajan in Bangkok. In 2005, he was said to be involved in the murder of Balu Dokre in Kuala Lumpur.
