Mangalore, Dec 7: 'Wake up Mangalore or be Damned!', the second book by young author Royston Fernandes was released at Valencia church hall here on Saturday December 7.

Social activist Vidya Dinker after releasing the book said, "Royston is a brilliant boy and I want to thank him for writing this book. I suggest all of you buy this book."

The book highlights Mangalore's struggle with climate change and stresses on the problems that locals may face in future. It sees Mangalore as any other coastal city that is a hub of activity and growing tourism and economy. It points out that more than half the world's industries lie along the coasts and 53 percent of the world's population lives on the coastline. At the same time, the coast is also where rising sea levels resulting out of climatic change may lead to displacement of millions. The book urges for a shift from a capitalist system to a society that is more sensitive towards the environment.

Elaborating on the book, Royston said, "Mangalore is changing. The climatical conditions are varying from day to day and in future it will affect Mangaloreans and their profession. I want everyone to join hands with me in this journey to keep Mangalore away from all natural disasters."

"The present system looks at the short term monetary benefits ignoring the issue from a long term humanitarian perspective. The need of the hour is a total overhaul of the system. A new socio-economic model - a society without selfishness," he said.

Eric Ozario, Mandd Sobhann gurkar and former president of the Konkani Sahitya Academy, Fr Bonaventure Nazareth, Valencia parish priest were also present at the book release ceremony.

Royston, a mechanical engineer by qualification, is an environmental activist. He wrote his first book 'Shall we save the Earth?' at the young age of 17.

we agree all what you said but no humans were responsible for extinction of Dinosaurs I have basically found all these " intellectuals" hating human beings more than other animals every product that is made is not "created" by man may be produced either it is mix of chemicals which again have their earthly origins, I can only agree on polluting which is purely man made! except for pollutants which is where we need to concentrate because in every field at present we concentrate much more in EHS ( Environment Health and safety) but basically I found most of them do copy paste and create a document for a project and do absolutely nothing beyond it, they do not even visit the site to verify if their procedures are being implemented just by writing stories nothing is going to change, it is the corporate mentality and responsibility and working towards a practical and achievable goal probably we can change things unless we have revisited millions of unrecorded years we do not know how earths atmosphere had behaved all those years to blame it squarely on human interference with nature! Are people ready to go back to Hunter gatherer life style?!! may be 1 in 10 million , so live life enjoy do not harm others, any way no one shall get out of it alive what ever you do that is the ultimate truth.

The Past Developments that have taken place in 3 phases according to experts :

a)From AD 1 Upto the Industrial Revolution & from 1760 to about 1840
    b)From 1800 to 1980 i.e. the next 180 years
    c)From 1980 to 2000 i.e. the next 18 years

All the developments that took place in the 180 years of the 2nd phase far out stripped the total developments in the preceding 1800 years and all the achievements & discoveries in the 3rd phase of 18 years between 1980 to about 2000 far outstripped the development that took place in the preceding 180 years.

In the last decade or say the last 8 years , both the damage and improvements in the name of development are indeed unimaginable and at greater speed .

Life had not really changed much till about 1960 in India .
An Engineer or a Doctor or a Teacher of the early 1900’s was not really much different from their counterparts of the early 1960’s.
Life was simple and wants were few and contentment was common.

But the changes thereafter have been amazing and those of the past decade itself have been mind boggling in all the spheres and more especially in the new Information Technology and Computers and also Communication technology. An Engineer of the 1980’s cannot compete with an Engineer of 2013 and so also in most professions .
But Technology apart, the other aspect are more important especially the spiritual and values part of man has not kept pace with its developmental counterpart. Health aspects have taken a beating as well and we find more number getting afflicted with sickness at a young age with Heart Ailments, Lung ailments, Depression and numerous other health complications some of which were unheard of in the 1960’s

Lifestyles have changed and the fast life of the current era is era is taking its toll not just on Man & Beast but also the also the Environment. Both Beast & Environment are helpless & only react to MAN actions. The Time for Man to act is Now. Thanks Royston for taking the lead .

I fully agree with U that we all must join together in this journey to keep our beautiful Mangalore away from all natural disasters. To certain extent I strongly believe that we need little support from our politicians in this regard. But they r least bothered to join hands with us.Rather their main agenda is only to fill their pockets as much as possible.Any way congratulation &I will certainly will buy your book very soon.

Climate change is already beginning to transform life on Earth. Around the globe, seasons are shifting, temperatures are climbing and sea levels are rising. And meanwhile, our planet must still supply us – and all living things – with air, water, food and safe places to live.
If we don´t act now, climate change will rapidly alter the lands and waters we all depend upon for survival, leaving our children and grandchildren with a very different world.
For example higher temperatures: As temperatures rise globally, droughts will become more frequent and more severe, with potentially devastating consequences for agriculture, water supply and human health. This phenomenon has already been observed in some parts of Asia and Africa, where droughts have become longer and more intense.
As temperatures rise, so do the risks of heat-related illness and even death for the most vulnerable human populations.
According to The Guardian, in 2003, for example, extreme heat waves caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe and more than 1,500 deaths in India. Scientists have linked the deadly heat waves to climate change and warn of more to come. In addition to heat-related illness, climate change may increase the spread of infectious diseases, mainly because warmer temperatures allow disease-carrying insects, animals and microbes to survive in areas where they were once thwarted by cold weather.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that climate change may have caused more than 150,000 deaths in the year 2000 alone, with an increase in deaths likely in the future.

Congratulations to Royston Fernandes for writing “Wake up Mangalore or be Damned” it is very important to make the public more aware of the tremendous risks of Climate Change.

Elaborating on the book, Royston said, "Mangalore is changing. The climatical conditions are varying from day to day and in future it will affect Mangaloreans and their profession. I want everyone to join hands with me in this journey to keep Mangalore away from all natural disasters."

Everyone must take climate change seriously. We all have to preserve and protect our environment.

    Best regards

We need several "Roystons' to shake our complacent people out of their stupor. Yes Royston your are just a in the ocean. But have we not seen many such instances of this single eventually becoming tne Ocean itself !

We are living on the legacy of our children and have a duty to perform and preserve the Earth.
When we took birth we did see a lot of trees around and by the time we die, we should certainly leave more trees around us.

Each one of us owes a debt to Mother Earth and should salute it every minute of our short lives.

    " Samudravasane devi parvathastana Mandale.
    Vishnu patni,namathubyam padasparsham khamasvame"

    {Oh ! Vishnu's concert, "Bhudevi"(Earth),with ocean itself to clothe and mountains as your breasts ,please pardon me I am touching you from my feet! Salutations to you.}
