Mangalore, Dec 23: The activists of Kudremukh Shram Shakthi Sanghatan (KSSS), in association with the district Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) staged a massive protest and day-long hunger strike in front of the DC's office on Monday December 23 to demand that the state and central government provide mining areas in Karnataka to KIOCL Ltd.

A protest march was also organized prior to the protest.

Addressing the protestors, Sureshchandra Shetty, president of KSSS, said, "KIOCL lost its distinct mines at Kudremukh in 2006 due to the Supreme Court’s verdict. Pseudo environmentalists have acted heavily to close down the company that lived worthy with of its entity in all aspects. Since then, none of the elected governments in the state have shown any interest in alloting mines in Karnataka for the resurection of our company."

"As a responsible trade union in the company, we knocked on the doors of the High Court and the Supreme Court but all our efforts have been in vain. Meanwhile, private mining firms have spoiled the highways from Bellary to Mangalore and Karwar by transporting iron ore and none of those environmentalists have raised their voice in the matter. But all the forces with vested interests came together to down the shutters of the eco friendly company that was pumping iron ore using pipeline for 120 km from Kudremukh to Mangalore without spilling a gram of ore," he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Venkataraya, legal advisor, said, "Under these circumstances, as a responsible trade union  in the company, we have decided to put a full stop to these contemptible occurrences in the interest of the company and nation. Strength of the work force is indeed present in their battle. We wish to remonstrate and draw the attention of governments from state to the centre and keep them alive till we get iron ore mines in Karnataka," he said.

Leaders Mohammed Rafiq, Ashok Shetty, Rajguru, Kuber Shetty, and Suresh Babu were present.

These pseudo environmentalists dont understand progress and development, We must ensure mining is started at such a good source of Iron ore, Otherwise how will our country progress? How will poverty be eradicated? I am sure the congress government led by Sri Sidharmaiah sir will do it.

I wonder if people know about this particular fact that the Iron ore available to KIOCL at Kudremukh was one of the rarest type available only in a few places in the world. It has extremely low sulphur and low phosphorus in it. The one which is found in places like Bellary and elsewhere is comparatively inferior in quality.

This KIOCL plant was a technical marvel at that time is 70's and 80's set up in collaboration with Canadian and Romanian technology. It was the largest spread plant in Asia once upon a time owing to its 78km long slurry ore pipeline.

The best part about this plant is that it does not require any pumping or electricity to move the slurry from Kudremukh to Mangalore and takes advantage of its altitude and available pressure. One of the best plants that I have seen.

It may not be possible to the Government to reopen KIOCL because of environmental problems. The Government nowadays gives lot of priority to maintain the environment and not encourages any activities affecting it.Hope for the best.Thanq.

hi mr vincent. Actually KIOCL is not demanding for reopening of mines at Kudremukh. KIOCl is having a pellet plant and Pig IRon plant at Mangalore, to survive KIOCL, it needs mining at any part of Karnataka. Requested for "C" Category mining.

So called environmentalists are professional ghosts in greater India. During the BJP regime in Karnataka illegal mining occurred in Bellary ruthlessly and KIOCL was shut in order to loot Bellary mines and everyone knows who were involved in this bounty. Corruption has played very important role in destroying KIOCL. I hope the Supreme Court will review the petition and restore the pride of Mining at kudremukh. Good luck to KSSS & HMS.
