Bangalore: Three-year-old's brain damaged after anaesthesia overdose

Bangalore, Dec 25 (DHNS): A three-year-old girl, who underwent a surgery for thigh fracture at Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Hospital here on Monday, is now battling for life after suffering brain damage due to an alleged overdose of anaesthesia.

Marriyam Kousar, who is now being treated at Malthi Manipal Hospital in Jayanagar, suffered hypoxia, which occurs due to shortage of oxygen supply to the brain. Director of  Manipal Hospital H S Sudharshan Ballal said Marriyam is critical.

The girl’s family alleged that she suffered brain damage due to an overdose of anaesthesia while undergoing a closed reduction procedure of fractured thigh bone at Sanjay Gandhi hospital. Senior authorities at Sanjay Gandhi hospital junked the allegations and said her parents got her discharged and were making false allegations. B G Tilak, medical superintendent, Sanjay Gandhi hospital, said: “The doctors treating the child performed a supracondylar surgery. The child would have lost the limb otherwise. The doctors had to administer a little anaesthesia. Later, she developed a respiratory problem following which she was put in the ICU.”

Minister of Health and Family Welfare U T Khader said an inquiry would be conducted by the director of his department. “Action would be taken if negligence is found. A report would be submitted in 10 days,” he said.

One of Marriyam’s relatives, Reshma, said: “She was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi hospital on Friday evening. Till Monday, the child received no treatment. The doctors were taking a call on whether to opt for surgery or some other procedure till Monday.”

“She underwent a closed reduction procedure at 8:30 am on Monday and was unconscious till late in the afternoon,” she said.

“We thought that it might have been the effect of anaesthesia given to her,” Reshma explained, adding that Marriyam’s condition worsened at night as she developed high fever. The child started biting her tongue and lips and was bleeding profusely. “The nurses stuffed cotton wool into her mouth to stop the bleeding,” she claimed.

Marriyam’s family had demanded access to her files and medical reports. “They refused initially. Later, we had to argue to obtain a copy of the same,” she added.

The child, according to sources, was then rushed to Indira Gandhi Hospital, where she could not be treated due to lack of certain facilities. Finally, she was admitted to Malathi Manipal Hospital.

Oh my gosh !!!!!! I am reminded of Michel Jackson ( propofol poisoning.)
My prayers for the speedy recovery of this cute goddess of a child. Medical negligence should be condemned and all responsible for such acts should be made accountable and be punished per the existing laws.
Documentation is a must b4 during and after anesthesia. Anesthetists should do routine rounds with the clinicians as follow up.

Anesthesia is given in calculating doses and if the surgery was at 8.30am and was scheduled to last for 60mins. then a calculated dose of 60mins. is administered and the patient should revive consciousness at least at 9.40am. else ( /- 10mins)anything beyond this would mean there has been a serious problem and doc should have attended to this problem rather than leaving her in an unconscious state. Blood oxygen levels should also have been monitored.

Brain damage could also be owing to high fever developed (ie if it was beyond 103 Deg.F).

I guess the parents should also consider checking the creatinine levels to asses the kidney functionality. creatinine should be below 1.6

This Doctor must be a Product of Capitation College. Students without any Merit Purchase Medical College Seats by paying Crores of Rupees Capitation Fees. Such people are not even fit to be Compounders leave aside being Doctors. Such doctors only take the life of patients due to their incompetence. They should be stripped of their Licence for Medical Practice lifelong .

I am so sorry for the Family and feel pity for the child.when one hears this think any Chance for this child. And when they say it is due to overdose of anesthesia they thought it is a elephant to be sedated or what?My doubt is that not overdose but when they ed tube in esophagus not in Larynx.that's why lack of Oxygen in the first Phase that caused brain damage.and she got this epileptic attack.later they must have realized the mistake and Intubation was corrected.but lack of Oxygen was already there. That is my first thought.and second what typ of nurses caring when the child has bleeding from mouth due to attack?nobody should stuff the Cotton in the mouth .The child should be kept sideways so that blood doesn't go into the lungs. That can have nasty effect.child can not breath.suffocates.very adventures Treatment in Hospital.hopes child gets better.but when the child survives will not be as before.Lord give the Family strength to bear this.Family should take a sSpecialized lawyer immediately.

My sympathies are with the family. Hope the child recovers soon.
Rading the published stories it appears that the doctors were cautious in this caseas they waited for 3 days exploring allthe coconservative options and finally decided to go for operation as it carried lot of risks. There are many doctors who are greedy but very few who are insanely greed that go to any extent.its because of thse few unprofessionals that the medical fraternity has beenin the negative press. I think this is one of those unfortunate cases where despite all the precautions, things have gone wrong. I could be completely wrong as I am commenting on a published news article and the facts could be different. Hope an impartial enquiry will bring out the truth ....
