Bangalore, Dec 27: The Centre has decided to have a ''rethinking” on the move to ban arecanut.

This was disclosed by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Gulam Nabi Azad on Friday.

''We have put a hold (the decision) on the proposed arecanut ban," he said speaking to reporters after reviewing various schemes of the Health and Medical Education departments.

Azad said pressure from Karnataka’s MPs, MLAs and State Government, especially Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as also from farmers was the reason for the reversal of the government’s decision.

''The UPA Government has decided to have a rethinking on the proposed ban on arecanut cultivation following pressure from various quarters,” the Union minister said.

A delegation led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met him in the national capital a few days ago and urged not to impose ban on arecanut.

Lakhs of families mainly in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and malnad districts of Chikmagalur and Shimoga of the State depended on the crop for their livelihood.

Amal Pusp, Director, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, had written a letter to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India on September 6, 2013 to examine the scientific evidences on the harmful effects of arecanut with a view to initiating necessary action to classify the nut as an injurious substance

He had suggested prohibition of the use of arecanut on the basis of scientific evidence on the reported harmful ingredients in arecanut as ingredient in any food product in conformity with the objectives of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

I don’t remember having heard or read anywhere that areca nut as well as betel leaves alone is harmful to health. It is supari and gutka made of areca mixed with tobacco and lime is harmful to health. Of these, tobacco is solely hazardous to health which has been proved years back. Tobacco even drains the fertility of the soil which renders the land ineffective for cultivation of any other crop. So why is tobacco still allowed to be cultivated in the country? If prohibited for human consumption, areca nut is also used in the manufacture of paints and colours.

It is ironic. Azad made the announcement on the day the CAMPCO founder Varanasi Subraya Bhat died. Is it a strange coincidence?

Areca with betel leaf mixed with Karpoora and Churna is offered to the deities and consumed by humans in India for time immemorial.

How can it become suddenly harmful to human consumption?

The matter must be thoroughly probed, and Amal Pusp and concerned officials and politicians should be put behind bars.

Instead of putting on hold, the Central Govt. should completely reject Amal Pusp's letter.

Use of fertile land for growing Arecanut is the main reason for the price rise of essential food commodities. Today we depend upon 'Ghat' for all our food needs. There should be ban on planting new Arecanut trees which should be implemented immediately. Otherwise we will soon pay Rs. 100 for 1 Kg of rice.

Arecanut plantation is not responsible for price rise of essential items. Just go to Mysore district and Belgaum district where Tobacco is grown in the area much larger than our Arecanut plantations.
Secondly, the main reason for the high price for vegetables & rice in Coastal area is that - here 50% of fertile land is left waste under the pretext of not getting suitable labour and paddy cultivation being not profitable. If such land is given to labour groups from outside on the lease they can cultivate the same at their cost grow vegetables at least and it will reduce the cost of vegetables.

Absolutely there is no scientific evidence on the harmful effects of areca nut consumption. Amal Pusp is just crazy and shameful he wishes to take undue credit which is anyway not his pie. Let the Centre completely ban cigarettes and liquor which is truly cancerous and dangerous to health. I am being an Areca nut grower, if the ban comes in we will approach the supreme court. The center is not the owner of the Law of the Land. We shall challenge.

    Gulam NA,

Could you ask Amal Pusp, Director, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare what made him to prepare the ground work for banning Arecanut in first place???

Most of these Govt babus know nothing....what they do does not make any sense to anybody other than themselves...

If you have any evidence of harmful effects of Aracanut put up...or ask Amal Pusk to shut up...you cant have it both ways...

    ...JH...
