Bantwal, Dec 30: In a tragic incident, youth died on Saturday December 28 after accidentally falling into a muddy pond at Hokkadi in Punjalkatte during a Kambala (buffalo race).

The deceased is identified as businessman Rajesh Bhat (26), son of Ramakrishna Bhat of RK Enterprises.

The RK Enterprises concern had put pendal for the buffalo race that was inaugurated on Saturday.  Rajesh was speaking to his workers after supervising the work at the fields where the buffaloes were to be left for the race.  It is suspected that he fell into the pond when he went to a nearby farm to answer nature's call.

Police said that though he was rushed to the hospital, he could not be saved.

It is said that the pond has been posing danger for passersby. Though it was fenced last time, it was not fenced during the present Kambala event. The pond is said to be full of sludge and bushes.  It is said that Rajesh died of suffocation in the sludge.

Rajesh had completed MBA from Alva’s institute.  He was actively supporting his father in his business for the last four years.

His body was brought to his residence near Mahaveera college for final rites after post-mortem.

It is said that this is the first time that such a tragic accident occurred during the Kambala race. The race was suspended in view of the incident.  It may be resumed before the end of the Kambala season after discussions with the committee, said advocate Suresh Shetty, president of Hokkadigoli Kambala committee.

A case has been registered in Punjalkatte police station as per the complaint by Ramakrishna Bhat, father of the deceased.

Wonder if he had any drinks. That way it is possible to trip and fall, as usual sides of such pond is uneven.
    Just a thought.
Even without drunk one can trip and fall and get stuck in the mud at the bottom of the pond.

Very tragic a young life is lost, RIP!!

Surprising that despite knowing the dangers of somebody falling in the slush filled pond a permanent railing was not installed and over and above a cricket tournament was organized in that place!!

Anyway, death is always on the prowl, just a reason required by it to snatch the destined!!

A precious young life is lost. He had gone to answer the natures call and he drowned. Did the organizers fail to provide temporary toilet facilities? Let the authorities make this compulsory before issuing permits whether it is a village or city.

In India wherever there are Grounds orother Civic amenity sites/places whether in Urban city localities or Villages, the concerned Local bodies such as the City Corporations/Municipalities/Village Panchayath must build minimum Two to three Wash rooms separately for Men and Women provided with the regular water facility & properly identified with Nameplates & maintained by the concerned authorities. If we have to believe the narrated incident, any person with sense for improvement of the society will agree with me so that the practice of using unknown locations for attending to the nature's call and end up loosing one's precious life in crowded places can be prevented. This will be good for the people residing in the vicinity also. This is my suggestion to mimimise such incidents in the future. In India this has to happen in a fast pace as day by day events organized by different groups are increasing and public participation is also increasing.

RIP. Very strange to hear these things where mostly there is no fence/boundary near well in the villages. There should be danger board/signal like on the roads, saying "Be careful, deep well is here" in such cases.
