Bangalore, Dec 30: Lecturers and other staff of all colleges in Karnataka, including those of engineering colleges and polytechnics will be subjected to biometric system from next month for tracking their attendance.

The move is aimed at checking the practice of the teaching and other staff in some of the colleges absenting and yet marking their attendance.

As many as 38 polytechnics and nine engineering colleges have adopted the system and it would be expanded to rest of the colleges in the State, according to officials of the Higher Education Department.

Installation of biometric system would enable the Government to address complaints of students about lecturers failing to take classes regularly or any other lapses on part of the lecturers.

There are 362 first grade government colleges in the State.

Biometric system would help officials in Bangalore to monitor attendance of each college staff regularly.

Higher Education Minister R V Deshpahde has supported the proposal of extending the system in all government run colleges and institutions, officials said.

The Edusat programme was being introduced in a few polytechnic and engineering colleges and it is proposed to be extended to all colleges by February-end

Technical Education Department has been giving special emphasis on skills development of students and special tie-ups are being worked out with corporate companies in this regard.

Training in soft skills and other vocational skills would be extended to about two lakh students in all government colleges before the end of the current academic year.

Experts from private companies would be involved in providing training in soft skills, officials said.

The automobile major Toyota has already involved in a tie-up with Mechanical Department of CPC Government Polytechnic, Mysore, the officials said.

Why only educational institutions must have biometric system and not government offices? First let this system be introduced in all govt offices and the politicians must be first to have a biometric system in their workplace.

Very happy to know that the Govt adopted Biometric system for teaching staff to track attendance. But it should be introduced first in elementary and high school. All teachers employed there are locals and every time teachers are absent. One teacher for one class and absent means no lessons. Teachers absent themselves for festivals, marriages or for other reasons.. Please introduce there too..
