Udupi: Pejawar Swamiji not to sit on palanquin pulled by people

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Jan 1: Sri Vishweshatirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math has announced that henceforth he would not be sitting on a palanquin carried by people and would instead prefer one that is carried by a motor vehicle.

He made this statement ahead of the Paryaya that is scheduled to be held on January 18. During the Paryaya that is held once in two years, heads of Maths sit on decorated palanquins that are carried in a procession flanked by thousands of people who gather at Car Street. As per tradition, the people from Mogaveer community pull the palanquin.

The Pejawar Swamiji expressed his decision in view of the recent controversy that the pulling of palanquin by people was against human rights. He said that he would henceforth be sitting in a palanquin kept on top of a motor vehicle and will come in the procession as before.

He said that this is not his new decision. It was decided earlier but could not be implemented due to issues of tradition.

He said Kaniyur Math procession will be held this time and Sri Vidyavallabhatirtha of Kaniyur Math and Sri Vishwapriyatirtha of Admar Math have also supported his decision and have refused to sit in the palanquin pulled by people.

He said that he will not be thrusting his decision on heads of other Maths, but stressed that he would however stick to his decision.

I feel that there nothing wrong if the people respectfully carry the swamijis during rituals connected famous Paryaya mahotsav which is prevalent since 800 years introduced by Madhwacharya and Sode Vadhiraja theertha. It does not all mean disgraceful. Its peoples wish to celebrate the Paryaya mahotsav in its original form.
I hill shrines those who can not treck the hill are provided with palanquins even today.Should this too mean disgraceful?
A actually felt bad when a poor cycle rickshaw walas carrying the people by peddling it with great difficulties.Even today no swamijis have expressed any concern on them. They are the poorest among the citizens of the country and doing their job to fill the belly. This system is prevalent even today in M.P,U.P etc.,

But... Carrying this swamiji is easy as he is light weighted. But Elephants are required for some swamiji's and Wodeyars of Mysore.... If other things are kept out from our mindset, the show without swamiji on palanquin may be a pale one.

Dear Swamiji, what is wrong if devotees voluntarily wish to take you in palanquin ? Devotees bow to you, & fall at your feet with devotion, & no one threatens them. So devotees if pulls a Temple Chariot or wish to take you in palanquin, it is with pure love & devotion. The question of human rights never arises here. Some insane people keep pointing fingers as if someone is forced to do it. I request Swamiji not to break tradition & culture, as at this rate if our athibuddhijeevies keep blowing trumpets, & we nod our head to their demands, we may lose many old traditions & customs.

Although I am not a Hindu, I am very much admire to the Udupi Ashta Mutts & its Paryaya Tradition. Paryaya is a high respect because of its traditions. I don't think pulling the palanquin is a violation of human rights. If Swamiji's are breaking one by one tradition, there will not remain any special in Paryaya celebration!!!!!!!.

    Right decision Swamiji.
We have some very foolish lady astrologers like boy-cut Chanda Pande who told in Kasturi TV after the death of Mysore Prince Srikantadatta Vodeyar last month that - he died because he refused to sit in Palankin but went by CAR to Banni Mantapa on Dassera day. Such backward walking Astrologers should be first thrown in jail.
