Mangalore: Police nab three inter-state chain snatchers, recover gold worth Rs 15 lac

Mangalore, Jan 3:
Pandeshwar police have arrested three inter-state chain snatchers who used to rob chains from women in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kasargod and Shimoga districts, said police commissioner R Hitendra.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday January 3, he said that the arrested are Sayyad Sahil (22), a resident of Paivalike, Uppala, Mohammed Rafeeq (25), a resident of Ruqsana Manzil, Goodinabali, BC Road, and Sadath Ali alias Hamsaraali (20) of Jumadi Gudde, Pudu village, Faringepet. Among them, one was arrested on December 28, 2013 and sent to custody, while the other two were nabbed later.

Police also recovered 450 gram of gold worth Rs 15 lac from the accused.

It is learnt that the accused were involved in the 23 theft cases in various districts, he said, and that they used to snatch gold chains from women by diverting their attention.

The accused Sayyad Sahil is also accused in a robbery case which took place in Shimoga district and in 11 other cases of various kinds. Sadath Ali is also accused in a ganja peddling case under the limits of Mangalore South police station, theft at a house, and a two-wheeler theft under the limits of Mangalore east police station. Mohammed Rafeeq is accused in various cases under the limits of Suratkal police station, Mangalore rural police station, Bajpe station and Mangalore south police station.

Two other accused Touseef and Riyaz are absconding, the commissioner said.

The arrest operation took place under the guidance of R Hithendra, Dr K V Jagadish, assistant police commissioner, and Pawan Nanjoor, Mangalore south subdivision assistant commissioner. Mangalore Pandeshwar police inspector Dinkar Shetty and staff nabbed the accused.

The commissioner also said that the police personnel involved in the operation would be suitably rewarded.
 
To a question on the possibility of invoking the Goonda Act against the accused in Deralakatte forced sex case, R Hitendra said “Police have acted according to the will of the victim. There is also a possibility of invoking appropriate sections on the accused,” he said.

    Chain snatching has become a very lucrative profession to earn easy money.Now these chain snatchers are migrating from one state to other state depending upon the scope.Unless the police department alert public and catch these chain snatchers it may spread more faster beyond control.Hope for the best.Thanq.

    Very Good Job!!!!!!!Expose all criminal to the local public, Women should try to stop wearing gold ornaments in unsafe manner and be more careful at places that are vulnerable for such crimes…Police should be break the legs of Chain snatchers, so they wont try it again because they cannot run...

    congratulations to the Team who snatched the trio or more.Many who lost their Gold ,chains will be happy to get back.Now put the chains although not of Gold but not so pretty but stabil to the trio to their Hands and legs.Dont allow to come out on bail.otherwise it will from the beginning.
