Mangalore, Jan 10: The Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya on Friday January 10 protested near the DC's office, expressing strong opposition to the proposed diversion of Netravati River or the Yettinahole project as it is known.

Addressing the protest, coordinator of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya Dinesh Holla siad, "All the organizations should come together and join hands with us to fight for this cause. We cannot rely on the government. The government is doing exactly opposite to what we expect from them. We shouldn’t have voted for this corrupt government.

"Prior to the elections Veerappa Moily had assured that he would not allow the Netravati diversion project to proceed, but later he forgot his promise. Fishermen and farmers completely rely on river Netravati, it is also the lifeline of the coastal people. Karnataka government is now trying to divert the river by spending Rs 60,000 crore for this river diversion," he said.

"The project is branded as a 'drinking water project' but the water will be used for industrial purpose. A few people from Dakshina Kannada also are supporting the project and we strongly condemning this. Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya is holding this protest to create awareness among the people of coastal area. Dr Paramashivayya is telling lies that this project will not affect coastal area. Former chief minister Sadananda Gowda too says this project will be completed without cutting trees. They are all fooling the people," he said.

AICC member P V Mohan said, "Politicians are not bothered about this land. National parties should have the vision to solve regional problems, only then can they survive. Has any river diversion project in this world succeeded? MPs and MLAs should raise their voice against this project."

Environmentalist Dinesh Shetty said that though he is differently-abled, he would continue fighting for the cause.

Harikrishna Punaroor said, "Government should not give our resources to others. It is using us. We must save our Netravati river and Tulunadu."

Dr Niranjan Jain inaugurated the protest.

Dinesh Pai, Madhav Ullal and others were present.

All protesters , You should make sure where this water supplied are going.

Water will go to industries like INFOSYS KIADB at MUdipu etc.
There has been instances where already water starved Infosys Offices using water to clean their roads inside the campus when their Senior Management from Bangalore visited in the past .
All this happened at the time 4 villages Manchanady, Konaje, Mudipu enroute Infosys office starves of water from last many years, meanwhile govt puing pipe lines to those companies
Its time Aam aadmi start rasing against such incidents and common people drinking water supplied to industries, while Panchayaths and villages do not get water

It is futile to expect anything good from the government, be it the Congress or the BJP. They are only interested in feathering their own nest and are not at all bothered about the country or in this case, the environment. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that thousands of trees will be mercilessly felled to facilitate this project. Both the BJP and the Congress are hand in glove with each other and it is the people who are being fooled. All right thinking people should protest against this ill conceived project and ensure that the government changes its mind. We should all rise and in the interest of this region never allow the river to be diverted. Do not believe the politicians. They can sell their own father and mother for the sake of money, you think they will care for the Nethravathi?

Going against nature is dangerous. Man must co-operate with nature and not to destroy it in any way. Secondly, if the locals do not want this project done, then Govt. Better abandon it because locals know their place better than Govt.

This water should be used for needs of our people. If industry requires more water, then sea water salination projects can be started by using such machines which they mostly do in gulf countries from sea water where there is no drinking /industry water. First preference should be for nearby areas. Else we can divert water sutlez or brahma putra river from the north.

Arrange one more tour of Ralegaon of Anna Hazare to find out how he revived parched drought prone land back to the land of plenty to our politicians who insist this is the only way.
Rain harvesting & conservation will solve all the problems of the north who have fluoride in their water.
Killing one river ain't gonna solve the problem, but will create more problems for all.
