Udupi, Jan 12: A newly-laid hump on Kinnimulky-Balaipade concrete road is said to have caused the death of a woman here on Saturday January 11.

The hump, which was laid the previous night, was removed by night following the accident.

The deceased has been identified as Chandrakala (45), a resident of Mattu.

She and her son Santhan Shettigar were riding on a two-wheeler from Udyavar to Udupi when the accident took place. Santhan who was riding failed to notice the newly-laid speed breaker, which was said to be more steep than usual, and lost control of the two-wheeler.

Chandrakala who was sitting pillion fell on to the hard concrete road and sustained serious head injuries. She was rushed to a private hospital in Udupi but could not be saved.

The hump on the road was laid on the night of Friday January 10, and no sign or paint was used to indicate its presence. Santhan hence did not notice the new speed breaker, which resulted in the accident.

A case was registered in Udupi traffic police station.

Hump removed

The PWD had constructed the Kinnimulky-Balaipade concrete road about seven months ago. The road joins the highway and is used by commuters travelling from Udupi to Katapady. Three humps were installed by the PWD on public demand. It is said that after the humps were installed, vehicular movement on this route was prohibited temporarily, but vehicles were seen moving on the road on Saturday despite the restriction.

As the news of accident spread, people from Udyavar and particularly the deceased person's neighbours gathered in a bid to get the hump removed. The PWD officials were informed, who came with a JCB and removed the hump. The traffic police too arrived.

Chandrakala was the sister of Nagesh Udyavar, personal assistant (PA) to union minister for road transport and highways Oscar Fernandes.

Authorities are so stupid here. Instead of getting the Hump painted for safety they removed the hump. Now let's see the other way round . Once the hump is removed , veichles or trucks will speed and knock down another 2 . Its a shame to the Authority that they cannot even buy a box of paint and paint the hump, but have money to waste for useless things.

Will anybody be booked in this case?
Doesn't the road authority have any responsibility for such incidents?
Are there no persons to inspect the humps and road conditions in general?

To be frank, I am not surprised to read this incident. That very afternoon as I was in the auto in that very road the auto driver and me discussed this hump will be removed after somebody succumbs to this.. What a tragedy.

A common man like us knows the danger with such humps and the personnel who lay those humps, those who are appointed by the government and the whole list of people involved are highly irresponsible and don't care for the death of a person.
They don't realize it could be their own family member who could die like that.
Shame on the entire system where there is zero accountability.

You are right Nelson. The law is different to the influential people and the common man. As the incident explains the two wheeler is travelling from Udyaver to Udupi and it is No-entry from Udyaver to udupi. Moreover, all Govt Buses routing through this road after 7PM . It is a such Narrow road and whether RTO is aware of this? Kindly concerned officer look into it and properly mark the required road signs to designated vehicles.

The blame directly goes to the road department. rto is responsible. Even transport minister is responsible. Some accident happens only coz of road dept.
the deceased family should ,, sue this rto.

Scientifically designed Rubber mounted hums with reflector used all over the world.
Man made humps is a century old technology good for Ambassador and P padmini cars which tyres are quite big enough to handle the situation.

There are more such unscientific humps in the entire Karnataka which are unheeded or unattended to be removed . Incidents as such are an eye opener to the concerned officials to prevent such accidents in their respective areas.

The unmarked speed breaker menace is not only limited to smaller interior roads. Bangalore-Mysore road is laden with unmarked humps and it only gets worse from Mysore to Madikeri. These unmarked speed breakers will not serve the purpose as the motorists will not be aware of speed breakers and will not slow down, thus endangering pedestrians as well as the occupants of the vehicles. But the way things are today, one is responsible for their own safety and hoping that govt will take care of these things is a distant dream.

Humps should be highlighted with white or yellow stripes and proper sign board well ahead of humps should be installed.

We have nothing but, killer roads with this negligence.

It is not hump that has caused the accident. It is an unscientific creation of the hump and absence of caution that has resulted in tragedy. A responsible official who has little common sense would not have designed it like this.

How come we are ignorant of public safety. Because of no marking on speed breaker a mother in a family is taken away. HOw can we be so silly in our duties and cause pain to citizens due to our negligence.

Speed breaker has caused death and speed breaker is removed. I understand the road joins the main road if there a vehicle collides tomorrow , then again there will be speed breaker?. Authorities should do what is right, instead of removing the speed breaker one should have reduced the height of the hump and have a clear marking on the road for the rider / driver to warn there is a speed breaker ahead about 300 meters in advance and the speed breaker should have tiger markings at the same time.

A simple negligence has snatched a mother from the family.

Authorities please do your duties with care and caution

'Chandrakala was the sister of Nagesh Udyavar, personal assistant (PA) to union minister for road transport and highways Oscar Fernandes' - Now we know why there was such swift action. Moreover, what about the fact that no person is held responsible for an irregularly sized hump created that led to death. Will no one be held accountable for that death at the PWD? I doubt anyone will be. After all, we live in a banana republic. Jai Ho.
