Mangalore, Jan 13: The 133-year-old St Aloysius College is poised to become a university soon, said Fr Denzil Lobo, rector, St Aloysius College Institutions. He was making a powerpoint presentation on the origin, growth and prospects of the college at the annual reunion of old students organised by St Aloysius College Alumni/ae Association (SACAA) at the college campus on Sunday January 12, with a few hundred former students and their families soaking in nostalgia of their days as Aloysian students.

Fr Denzil noted that the college had already enjoyed autonomous status and, more recently, has been designated community college. He stressed the role of the college in empowering women by throwing its portals open to them since the college celebrated its centenary in 1980 and noted that presently girl students comprised 50 per cent of the total intake.

Fr Denzil traced the Jesuit tradition of imparting education and more than information, transforming men and women into leaders of tomorrow and living for others. He said that the students are encouraged to shine and reach out to people with compassion. In this context he recalled the Boys Home set by the college post-centenary to take care of juvenile and destitute children who have greatly benefited by this uplifting mission as reflected in some of them attaining post-graduate degrees like MCom and MSW. He recalled how this activity has evoked wide appreciation by visitors to the Home and gave the example of writer Aravind Adiga, an alumnus of the college, gave a substantial part of an international award he received some years ago. Fr Denzil said the college has developed vast infrastructure to be eligible to be a university and its two campuses compared with the best even globally. The college, he said, was collaborating with international universities like Boston, North Dakota and Fairfield.

The evening function started with introduction by Felix D’Silva, convenor of the 2014 Reunion and welcome by SACAA president, Michael D’Souza. Jesuit scholastics rendered the commencement prayer song. To emphasise the interactive part of the programme, the VIPs and SACAA officials did not sit on the dais and went to the podium to play their part.

During the function, Fr Francis D’Almeida, vice-principal of the college and deputy director of SACAA and Arthur D’Souza, an ex-president of SACAA, were felicitated by Fr Denzil and Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal of the College and director of SACAA, in recognition of their month-long visit to United Arab Emirates to garner substantial funds for the Rs 5-crore Olympic class swimming pool project under execution on the college campus. The duo also honoured Alwyn Pinto of Dubai who had untiringly helped the visiting fund collectors by facilitating their local logistics

Dr Richard Gonsalves, vice-president, SACAA, proposed the vote of thanks. Sumit Rao and Janice Goveas progressed the function and conducted the games with elan.

As SAC has already produced enormous academics during the past several decades, it is sure that SAU will continue the process of adding the intellectuals to the world society.
While a mistake is committed due to weakness, ignoring and blindly continuing with the error is a grave mistake.
133 years ago, during the childhood of St Aloysius College, the public were happy with the bullock carts as a comfortable (and only available) mode of transport. Though the bulls were used to pull carts, the bulls were not carrying any weight, but were just pulling and moving the heavy carts.
The introduction of vehicle engine and encouragement of fuel made us to put both the bull and cart on the wheels and pull it from a standstill position till the destination.
Unfortunately, even today, after a couple of centuries of evolution in the automobile sector, we are carrying and moving both bull and carts on wheels, in spite of modern technology and development in roads and infrastructure.
In fact, if we implement a conceptual change, as pull and move, (instead of carry and move) we can save a considerable volume of fuel consumption and billions of dollars from our oil import bill, eliminate pollutions, reduce costs and increase the capacities of vehicles.
With the saved huge funds several development projects can be started and the option is to create enormous job opportunities.
While the telecommunication is enjoying the revolution, sadly the surface transport sector is suffering from severe problems.
If the change is supported, we can have a rapid revolution, to have a world of difference.

St. Aloysius College is fully justified and capable to rise to the rank of an University. This is a good news not only for Mangalore but for the whole of India. This is a thought and a vision of the Jesuits long overdue to take shape in Mangalore where St.Aloysius College has created some of the finest landmarks of Education.

Hundreds of thousands of students have entered the gates of St,Aloysius for all these decades and have earned all the intellectual and social values in order to spread their talents and virtues in several parts of the world - far and beyond the borders of India.

We shall always remain grateful to the Jesuits as well as St. Aloysius for all the disciplines gifted upon us, which disciplines, we have carried wherever we have gone in pursuit of our daily life.

Thanks, Fr. Denzil, for all your efforts, and hopefully soon the Light House Hill Road will have the appearance of a new sign showing St. Aloysius University where I would like to address your students and share some of the past precious memories.

St. Aloysius University is located at a prime property of Mangalore where the Jesuits have laid a solid foundation for Education with some of the finest faculty members, fine students, and most importantly the Jesuit congregation where the Institution as a whole is thriving so well to make the community move forward with a vibrant spirit of secular solidarity. St. Aloysius University therefore will easily blend as a famous Educational Institute that will benefit thousands young men and women in the years to come.

Very good news. The college is already autonomous. I feel it may not be a full fledged university like Mangalore, Bangalore and Mumbai, but may get the deemed university status like Manipal.
