Udupi, Jan 15: The three-chariot festival (mooru teru) was held with much pomp and gaeity on the occasion of Makara Sanktanti at Sri Krishna Math at Car Stree here on Tuesday January 14.

It was on Makara Sankranti that the exponent of Dwaita philosophy, Acharya Madhwa, installed the beautiful idol of Lord Krishna at Udupi nearly 800 years ago.

The idol of Sri Krishna was carried in Garuda chariot to Madhwa Sarovar and taken around three times. After performing various rituals, it was then brought back to the chariot.

The two other chariots carried the idols of deities Chandramouleshwara and Sri Ananteshwara. The three chariots were taken in procession around the Car Street.

Spectacular fireworks were an added attraction at the event.

Sri Vishwallabhatirtha Swamiji of Sode Math, Sri Vishweshatirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math, and heads of other Maths were present.

On Wednesday January 15 morning, Choornotsava was held wherein Swamijis of different Maths pulled the chariots.

A few devotees performed penance by rolling-over the path from behind the chariot that was pulled by Swamijis and temple celebrants.

The religious celebrations concluded with a holy dip in Madhwa Sarovar.
