Shiradi Ghat repairs: Centre approves Rs 95 cr; Siddu regime releases Rs 5 cr

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Jan 16: With work on the repairs of the Shiradi Ghat section of the Bangalore-Mangalore road having already started, the Siddaramaiah-led Congress regime has released Rs 5 crore for taking urgent work while the Centre has approved laying of a concrete road at a cost of Rs 95 crore.

Giving this information to reporters in Bangalore, Karnataka’s Public Works Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa said the urgent repair work has already started.

Laying a concrete road would provide a big relief to people travelling to and from the coastal city of Mangalore to Bangalore, the minister said.

Dr Mahadevappa said the State government has proposed to widen the Bangalore-Mysore state highway to ease traffic congestion between the State Capital city of Bangalore and the cultural capital city of Mysore.

He said the Public Works Department has prepared a plan to widen the stretch from the present four lanes to eight lanes to ensure smooth movement of vehicles.

''We have also prepared a plan to develop an alternate route to Mysore through Kanakapura and Malavalli," he said.

Replying to a question on the NICE road, he said the road project was facing legal controversy and a case was pending before the Supreme Court.

The status of the project would be known only after the Apex Court verdict, he said.

He said the Public Works Department has submitted 29 proposals, including Bangalore-Mysore, for upgrading the state highways into National Highways to the Centre for approval.

''No more demolition of walls in Vidhana Soudha”

With Karnataka’s Forest Minister B Ramanath Rai and Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya landing the Siddaramaiah regime into a major embarrassment by demolishing walls for renovation of their office chambers, the minister had a tough time in defending the Government.

The State Government will not allow demolition of any walls in the Vidhana Soudha in the name of renovation of rooms in the future, the minister said.

Dr Mahadevappa said the Department of Personnel for Administrative Reforms (DPAR) officials have been instructed not to permit demolition of any walls in the State Secretariat.

Sand mining impasse may end in 15-20 days

The impasse over transportation of sand by truck owners will be ended in the next 15-20 days, the minister said.

Answering questions from reporters, he said the present crisis on sand extraction and transportation was expected to last two-three weeks.

The Deputy Commissioners, who have been heading the district monitoring committees on extraction, storage and auctioning of sand, have been instructed to complete the process of identifying sand blocks in their respective districts.

The State Government has framed rules for scientific extraction of sand to ensure availability of sand at affordable cost. He said that all activities of sand mining and distribution would be streamlined in the next 15-20 days.

Referring to recent talks held with the truck operators, who were on agitation, "We are not concerned to oversee the activities of hiring of vehicles by the public.”

Truck owners were on strike for the last few days opposing harassment from officials in issuing permits for transportation of sand.

Govt won’t yield to pressure tactics

The State Government has formulated new guidelines on sand extraction and procurement and the truck operators had welcomed it.

"The government is not going to succumb to pressure tactics of truckers," he said.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has convened a meeting of all Deputy Commissioners on January 29 to discuss all issues, he said.

The State Government has declared Chikkballapur, Kolar, Bangalore Urban and Ramanagaram districts as "no sand mining districts,” Dr Mahadevappa added.

Instead of concreting the existing road. Oscar ji should think of thrust boring/ tunneling the ghat/mountain similar to euro tunnel. The strait underground road will save lots of fuel & time. The transporters can pay an equivalent toll for travelling through.

Everyone who is responsible for these roads knows, both in dept and govt. what to do for correction. Engineers are not fools. There is different reasons not keep these roads in good condition. Attitude of people from our region towards politicians has to change. Too much respect...These bunch of politicians ( all ) from our region are cheating their own people.

    Dear Mr. Ganesh,Mangalore/Bangalore

I also drive on this Ghat Road very often. In December 2013 I drove through Charmadi Ghat as Shiradi Ghat was in a pathetic condition with full of potholes.I returned via Shiradi Ghat on 7th January 2014, but about 5 km of Shiradi was then was still full of potholes. Shiradi Ghat is about 30 km.Hence, I will be glad if any DW readers,Engineers will advise me whether we need RS.3 crores to concrete one km of Shiradi Ghat.I am not aware whether this contract has been awarded to reputed contractors like L&T.

State of Karnataka is full of Gabro/Dolomite /granite quarries.
Time for govt to allocate these qovt. quarries on lease to build Heavy duty crushers and crush Ga bro aggregate /dolomite and granite boulders to extract enough tonnage of sand for Local consumption and export to other state sin India .
why go after river sand and screw up?
Look in the deserts of UAE there are mountains of Gabro/dolomite in RAK AND FUJAIRAH ,They scientifically and professionally etartc /quarry/crushed and neatly transports to construction site sin Trucks and in barges .
    Why can't we simply follow?
This is called governance -discipline and not 420 goonda practice .All easy money.
That is why we need professionals like Dr. kalam - type of scientists to rule the states/ country and not the rogues / thugs and criminals.
We need professionals with an iron hand to rule.

It is a shame that not one government has shown real interest to look into this shiradi ghat problem. Mangalore is a port town from where a lot of exchange of commerce takes place. I don't understand what the big deal it is find the actual problem with the frequent damage to this road and what the big deal it is to just get a permanent solution to it.

Good news to Mangaloreans & others who commute on this Shiradi Ghat, which has been in the news for years now. I hope that 95 Cr sanctioned by Central Govt & 5 Cr from State Govt goes straight to Road Repair work & not to the pockets of " People Concerned in this Project" and others involved. When this amount drains down from Delhi to Bangalore to Mangalore, how much of it will be filtered through various pockets, God knows & God save us too.!!
This is a lifeline between Mangalore & Bangalore & was long due for a repair. Let us stop playing the blame game with Govts because they are all the same. One better than the other or one worse than the other..!!
What ever it is, we hope this road is repaired in such a way that it doesn't go bad for many more years to come..!!

Congress Govt wakes up and thinks about the development works only during the last 6 months of their enure. Reason why ?, No prize for guessing. Because public memory is too short to remember any good or bad works done by the Govt. 9.6 years of rampat corruption in the last six months, Food bill, minority bill, that bill, this bill lokpal bill etc etc etc, Anna bhagya, finally after the elections its only "MANNU BHAGYA" for people.

"IF IT WAS GEORGE FERNANDES (KONKAN RAILWAYS HERO), HE WOULD HAVE COMPLETED THESE PROJECTS BEFORE ANNOUNCING" INSTEAD OF USELESS OSCAR FERNANDES (MINISTER FOR HIGHWAYS)OR USELESS MALLIKARJUNA KHARGE (MINISTER FOR RAILWAYS) HOLDING SUCH HIGH MINISTRIES IN CENTRAL (BOTH ARE SLEEPING - OSCAR IS SLEEPING ON HIGHWAYS AND KHARGE IS SLEEPING ON RAILWAYS). THEY WOULD HAVE DONE SOME GOOD WORK BEFORE THEIR TERM FINISHES. ONLY 3-4 MONTHS LEFT. MANGALORE RAILWAY STATION BECOMING MANGALORE DIVISION IS STILL A NIGHTMARE. STILL IT IS UNDER MALABARESE HOLD.

    Dear DW readers,
Earlier DW reported that Mr.Oscar has sanctioned RS.4 crores for temporary repair of this Ghat.Later on Dw has reported that Mr.Oscar has sanctioned RS.95 Crores to concrete this stretch. After a few days Times of India reported that MR.Oscar has released RS.95 crores.U all r aware that this is a national highway.Hence my question to U all is what is the need for Mr.Siddu to release Rs.5 crores, when our Bangalore city roads r with full of potholes, & r all in pathetic conditions. Why Mr.Siddu is not thinking of providing smooth & well maintained roads to the IT capital City of Bangalore,by diverting these Rs.5 crores.Any hidden agenda?

If not then they are no better than previous BJP Govt. who couldn't complete this Ghat Road repair work in their tenure!

Shiradi Ghat is a national highway and you know who are in power for past 10 years. No need to politicize the issue after-all it is the common people who have to break their back not your MPs

I am aware the Govt in power at Center for the past 10 years and prior to that 5 years as well.
M.P.'s are not 'yours' they are 'ours' whether we like them or not.

Not to politicize the issue, fine, GOOD ADVICE, but apply the same yardsticks to other politicizing commentators as well.
Advice to ed few then, the advice itself looks politicized.

It took us 6 hrs to reach Mangalore from Bangalore out of which 2 hrs spent on this stretch. I almost fell down from the seat during one break, when I was cursing the politicians for not repairing the roads. Last time I traveled few years ago, the roads were good. I think there is no longer life for the job done on this road due to the high altitude at each level. But yes, because of this, we can view the scenery well and its beautiful and dense and scary too..

We must be the only nation in the world where one of the wealthiest states in the country does not have a road, nor a direct rail connection between two of its largest cities!

Corrupt politicians from all parties, blatantly corrupt bureaucrats, private bus lobbies have ensured the people of DK will forever be denied the basic infrastructure to travel. For 15 years Shiradi ghat - a part of the national highway, has been left in disrepair. 40 years of public demand, and we still dont have frequent, direct train connection between Blr and Mangalore. We should collectively hang our heads in shame for electing these so called "representatives".

This corrupt Govt was sleeping even 5 months after the monsoon.

Now this govt sanctioned the fund. At least 1 month is needed from now to commence the work. 2 months to finish the work. By March end the work will be finished. Road will be good in April and May months. By June 15th Monsoon will start and road will be back to worst condition again. Ee kelasa yaava purusharthakkagi?

If this scamful and shameless Govt had little care about the people, it should have started the work in September month itself.

Can someone please LIST OUT the achievements of SANMANYA SAARIGE SACHIVA in last 6 months?
