Mangalore, Jan 16: It was thorough entertaining evening for the big crowd that had gathered at St Sebastian Church grounds here on Thursday January 16, as renowned singers of Konkani music world rendered stupendous performances at 'Sangeeth Saanz' held as part of week-long celebrations marking the culmination of St Sebastian Church centenary year.

It was not music alone that enchanted the audience. The event was a true blend of music, songs, dance and side-splitting comedy. In other words, it was a joyous festival in itself.

The specialty of the event was that all the performances, including the dance, music, songs and jokes, were by Bendore parishioners.

Veteran singers 'Sangeet Samrat' Henry D'Souza along with Konkan Kalashri Claud D'Souza enchanted the audience with their soulful singing and gave them a treat by performing some evergreen melodies. Rendition of songs of the late V J P Saldanha, the late Vally Vaz, the late Harry-Jerry D'lima and Austin D'Souza Prabhu add more charm to the occasion.

It was 70-year old Henry D’Souza who romanticized the atmosphere with his evergreen song of the 60s titled, ‘Sangle kithe hayi ghayi’. It was not just the song. Coupled with his trademark steps and body moves, he charmed every person present in the audience. Expectations from the audience went higher with whistles and cheers, even for others songs presented during the evening.

In addition, singers like Archie Fernandes, Galdin D’Souza, Clement Lobo, Anna D’Souza, Munita Veigas, Renston Fernandes, Kiran Menezes, Asha Menezes, Clerita Lobo and Glen Aroza entertained the crowd with unique pieces of renditions.

Some of the songs presented at the event were ‘Pathkachein hein prajeeth zalein’, ‘Konkani Shikayi’, ‘Badhalla ho kal’, and ‘Kalzacho gund..thunch tho’, to name a few.

The songs were beautifully complimented by dance performances by CAL troupe and others.

The event was truly a family fiesta. Jokes by well-known comedian artiste Dolla Mangalore along with compere for the evening Leslie Rego were truly exceptional and witty, and received by huge rounds of applause by the audience. A generous dose of humour was also added by the trio of Simon, Arun and Rita.

Compere Leslie Rego introduced each performance in his distinct tone, beautiful words and inimitable style, blending meaningful messages with humour.

Earlier, during a brief formal programme, chief guest Fr Mark Valder said, “The parish of Bendore is filled with unique talents. When I was the parish priest for ten years decades ago, it was the parishioners who brought fame to the church at the diocese level.” He advised the parishioners to make the best use of human resources and work hard to reach greater heights.

On the occasion, Fr Mark Valder felicitated Henry D’Souza, Claude D’Souza, Clement Lobo, Walter Castelino, Aloysius D’souza, Galdin D’Souza, Gerald Towers, Rita Fernandes, Archie Fernandes, Jossie Rego, Grace Miranda, and Vishal Kumar.

Fr Antony Serrao, parish priest welcomed and Ozwald Pais, convener of centenary cultural committee proposed the vote of thanks.

It was indeed an enchanting event except that the sound system could have been better.
'Badhallo vo Kal' was composed and sung by the inimitable Valli Vas way back in the early sixties at one of the Mission Sunday drama event traditionally staged by the CAL. It would have been meaningful if it was also at least passingly mentioned by the Compere that Mrs.Valli Vas and her
son are residing in Bendore Parish.
'Kaljacho Gondo thum tho...' (not 'Kalzacho gund ... thunch tho' was also one of the duets mime acted by Walter Castelino and Eric Sequeira for the play 'Sobith Saunsar' written by Henry D'Souza staged by the CAL at its Mission Sunday event in the early sixties. The tune/music to the duet was again by none other than Valli Vas.

While reading the wonderful coverage and watching the lovely pictures the sweet memories of my childhood days at my beloved Bendur parish started gushing back. Great to see most of the Bendur celebrities on one stage. Hats off to "Sangeeth Saanz" organizers for staging such a mammoth event as the part of the Centenary Celebrations of our Bendur Parish. Long live unity of all the talented personalities and long live to our beloved Bendur Parish!
