Mangalore: Did betting push Shailesh Shetty to commit suicide?

Updated

Mangalore, Jan 18: Loss suffered in betting is said to be the reason behind the suspected suicide of Shailesh Shetty (27), a resident of Kavoor, whose body was found at Sultan Battery here on Friday, January 17.

Sources said that Shailesh was working for a private chit fund firm and was keen on cricket betting. He eventually borrowed money from others when he suffered loss in betting.

It is learnt that betting is actively taking place in the Kavoor area, and is popular among the youth. A year ago, another person identified as Nithin too reportedly committed suicide after he was trapped in the debts caused by betting.

According to family sources, Shailesh left home in the evening on Thursday, January 16, but never returned. He had left his mobile phone and wallet back in his house. Accordingly, the family had registered a police complaint too.

On Friday evening, the bike belonging to Shailesh and his footwear were found close to NMPT guest house, near Tannir Bavi and the body was later found at Sultan Battery.

Mangalore, Jan 17: The body of a youth who went missing late evening on Thursday January 16 was found at Sultan Battery here on Friday January 17.

The deceased has been identified as Shailesh Shetty (27), a resident of Kavoor. It is suspected that he committed suicide.

He went missing on Thursday evening and a complaint was filed in Kavoor police station after efforts by his family to locate him went in vain.

During the search operation on Friday, his footwear and bike were found near Tannir Bavi beach and it is surmised that he might have jumped into the sea.

Though sources said that he left behind a death note, police did not confirm finding it.

It is said that financial problem had driven him to take this extreme step. He had returned from a pilgrimage to Sabarimale just two days ago, sources said.

One should understand the reality. Its only hard work and smart work pays and not shortcuts like betting or gambling. I feel sorry for his parents whose dreams are shattered.

Cricket is just an excuse here. I have seen folks sitting in bus stops, betting on 'from which side would the next vehicle appear'.

RIP....I learn that there is no shortcut for success, no shortcut for easy money...there is pain, suffering, failure behind it and all have to go thru that. If anybody goes for the shortcut route if he wins fine..otherwise there is hardly escape from the pain ..

This is because of the idea of making a fast money without hard work and the result we can see it., todays youth wants a fast money, to have a big luxury car, one high-fi touchscreen mobile, etc only to impress others., just they forget that we do not get anything easy unless we put a effort on it., any RIP

Unfortunate, but cowardly act. Failures in life are bound to happen, however, this is not a way to resolve them. Failures make us stronger to deal with life. RIP Shailesh.
