Five die as bus overturns near Bangalore

Bangalore, Jan 21 (DHNS): Five people, including a pregnant woman and a six-year-old boy, were killed on Monday when a Volvo bus in which they were travelling overturned after hitting a median on NH-4 near Hoskote in Bangalore Rural district.

The bus, belonging to Rajesh Travels, was on its way to Bangalore from Nellore, via Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. Around 30 people were injured in the accident, which occurred around 5:15 am near MVJ Hospital, about 40 km from Bangalore. Driver fatigue and rash driving are said to be the reasons for the accident.

The deceased were identified as Anusha (24), Vijay Kumar (37), Prasad (32) and Pradip (30), all employed with private firms in the City, besides six-year-old Manas Kumar. Pradeep sustained a serious head injury and died at Hosmat hospital here, while the rest died on the spot, police said.

Vijay Kumar was working with Wipro in Nigeria. He had come to India on a vacation and went to Nellore, his hometown, to celebrate Sankranti with his family. He was on his way to Bangalore. His wife Padmaja, daughter Akshaya (4) and son Adi (2) were critically injured. Another victim, Anusha, was pregnant. Her husband Srikanth, who works in Bangalore, was seriously injured.

Thomas Chandy, director of Hosmat, said: “Two patients, Uma Mahesh and Lakshmi, were admitted to ICU as they suffered serious injuries while Neehar Reddy, who has a left elbow dislocation, is undergoing treatment.”

According to the Hoskote police, there were 49 passengers on the bus, along with two drivers and a cleaner. Most of the passengers were from Nellore and on their way to Bangalore.

The injured were rushed to MVJ Medical and Research Hospital in three ambulances.

Driver B S Venkatappa, the spare driver and the cleaner were also injured. In a statement to the police, Venkatappa said he rammed into the median while trying to avoid hitting a stray dog. The police, however, said most of the passengers complained of rash driving.

Elvira, Bangalore-Dubai,/Jossy Saldanha, Mapusa/Vincent Rodrigues, Katpady-Bangalore/J.Anata - Mangalore -Bangalore: You are all blaming the Volvo Bus Company. It is purely the drivers fault who hit the Road Meridian, his fatigue and rash driving responsible for this accident.

We the people of DK, Udupi and in Karnataka, are good and expert in blaming others without ascertaining the facts. Read the above news and the news appearing in the leading newspapers of today before commenting.

Do not blame the Volvo Company. Jai Hind and Jai Karnataka.

@Edward Monteiro - Was a single PIL filed against Volvo when that horrific accident took place either at Khammam or near Harihar? 55 people had died, still there is NO EMERGENCY doors fitted to Volvo buses....that's what I pointed out

Yes @ Edward Montiero, I've written to Volvo on the safety measures requisite for Indian Roads & those as provisioned by the RTO at Bangalore post the accidents, PIL is being discussed now since no social service society, nor the Congress Govt has come forward, thanks to your advice yes I would now pursue this as I feel deeply on these accidents & myself being a traveler most times, i m at big risk too

Indian roads are not suitable for Volvo buses. Volvo engine is very powerful and drivers are not aware of it, ultimately lose control while driving.
Drivers should have safety awareness and safe defensive driving skill!
India buses are designed for India road where not causing much danger.

The real problem is the rectangular shaped vehicles (boxes) to overturn.
As the divide and rule is the global best practice, if the length of vehicles divided into two unequal parts and joined with a special link, we can have a rapid revolution in the surface road transport sector.
The new concept in vehicles move can save a huge volume of fuel, billions of dollars, eliminate pollution, reduce costs and increase the capacities of vehicles.
If the commentators are willing to support, we can have a World of Difference.

When any Volvo bus meets with accident the name of Manufacturing company-Volvo is clearly mentioned by the media. But when any bus manufactured by Ashok Leyland or Tata or other companies meets with an accident, then newspapers just mention that a Bus met with accident without mentioning the name of the manufacturer. Has anyone kept account as to how many buses of Leyland or Tata have met with accident since last 3 months while they have kept account of 3 Volvo buses met with an accident during this period ?

Rash driving should be the cause. Since Volvo buses have a very good engine, the drivers thought they can fly on the road without caring their passengers and others on the road. Better actions taken on the drivers and cancel their license for at least two years so that they can also feel the pain.

Volvo is a brand company which is famous for its safety and driver comforts our bus drivers are driving the bus like car due to its grip and this is leading to the accident.
Request our RTO people to give licence to those drivers who are certified by Volvo company or ask a Volvo person to accompany our RTO before giving licence to our drivers.

No, it is not the fault of Volvo, but the fault of Indian drivers and the roads which aren't conducive to high speed maneuvers.

The bus drivers need to be tested for road worthiness before they are allowed to drive. Sadly, in india, the tests can be rigged and the tests aren't comprehensive enough

Very sad news. May their soul rest in peace.
Rash driving or over speed can be controlled only by installing speed limit systems especially in public transports. Monitoring busy highways by radar/traffic cameras and fixing huge penalty amount for violators will be more effective to control such tragic indents.
