Mangalore, Jan 22: A silent protest by the non-teaching staff of Kasturba Medical College on Wednesday January 22, demanding an increase in salaries as per the state or the central government pay scales, turned into a strong outcry against the management.

Though it began as a silent protest with non-teaching staff of KMC wearing badges, the protest intensified as they came out of the institution and demanded a revision in their salaries.

Addressing the protest, Purushotham K M, president of Manipal University Employees' Union said, “There are 1000 non-teaching staff in the city working in this institution. Till 1996 these non teaching staff used to get full salary as per the state government salary guidelines but later it was stopped. Although we have spoken to the management there has been no satisfactory response.

"The employees are not even given proper incentives. Although the basic salary as per state government guidelines starts from Rs 9,600, non-teaching staff get only Rs 4,000, which is not even half the amount stipulated by the state. It is an injustice to the employees. Teaching staff and doctors have also supported our cause. Hence the management should provide suitable salary to the non-teaching staff," he said.

K Vishwanath Shetty, district president of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh said, "There several non-teaching staff in the institution, most of them from middle class families. Although the management orally assured to resolve this matter, the non-teaching staff did not get justice. Therefore, the institution should revise the salary structure as per the state or central government pay scale."

Sudarshan, president of Manipal University Non-teaching Employees' Association said, "Our non-teaching employees have already held a peaceful protest by wearing black badges, and brought the matter to the notice of the registrar, the HR management has failed to consider our demand, hence the management should provide the state or the central government pay scale and extend the age of retirement from 58 years to 60 years."

On this occasion Suraj, vice-president of Manipal University Employees' Union, and Nagaraj, secretary of Manipal University Non-teaching Employees' Association were present.

Several non-teaching staff like AC mechanics, accountants, blood bank technicians, cleaners, clerks, dark room assistances, general duty workers, laboratory technicians and others joined the protest.

The so called deemed universities should be bought under strict rules regarding employee remuneration, profit sharing, etc. as they earn lots of moolah by way of capitation fees, high consultation charges, among other things, but only the doctors and their support staff are paid very huge salaries at the cost of the poor middle class workmen who act as support staff!! High time transparency and justice is shown by them in these days of sky high inflation!! It is clear from this that only the top cream are enjoying higher salaries, etc. and most of the common man working here is badly struggling to make ends meet with no scope for other income!! Jai Hind!!

No doubt that this institution is generating good profits from its business (hospitals now fall full fledged in the business category) and the salary for non teaching staff, whom they consider second rung, are given peanuts!! In these days of high inflation a basic starting salary of 4500 is shocking, especially for a city like Mangluru which has perhaps the higher cost of living than even Mumbai!! Profit sharing bonuses should be doled out to these middle class workers!! Jai Hind!!

The prices of Food products, commodities, traveling rise day by day. The salary does not increase, especially for the non-teaching staff, they work more get less non-teaching staff is the backbone of every institution. A little negligence or mistake by them the office or institution land into problem. They have to work carefully, concentration and with responsibly, but they are discriminated and neglected.

When it comes to employee salary, just pay with par in line with other employees irrespective of their Contract nature. It’s not wise to upset these employees. Cunning part of our any Government is that they have enough sources for funds for vote banking whereas they don’t have funds for teaching staff and development?

Surprisingly, what ever the state govt or central govt wages, it's not at all enough for the Mangalore city cost of living.
So at least demand rs. 500 a day, because these hospitals (not only KMC) charge the people, whether he/she is alive or dead.

    Instead of paying fines, penalties
and incurring other non-revenue expenditure it is better for the KMC Management to consider this just demand! After all the scion of the head of this Institution is one of the richest persons in Karnataka! Distribute wealth Sir... Make a lot of people healthy....
