Mangalore, Jan 24: "When BEM Institution invited me for its 175th anniversary celebration, I happily agreed, because I was also a part of the institute’s 150th year celebration. Moreover, my father the late Ratnavarma Heggade also studied in this institution,” said Dr D Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala.

He was speaking at the penultimate day of the five-day event marking the culmination of the 175th year celebration of BEM Institution.

He further said, "The arrival of Basel Mission brought in many changes in society, especially in the field of education. They also involved themselves in business, politics, economics, and agriculture. They influenced the lifestyle of people. Though our country had a history of 5,000 years and had a good education system even before they came, it was only for the upper class and not for the poor."

Dr Heggade also unveiled the blueprint of the 3D future building project plan which will be built at a cost of Rs 2 crore. The project as has been undertaken by Prakash Simons, builder/architect and president, UBMC, in memory of the 175 years celebrations of the institution.

Walter J Maben, in his keynote address, said, "Protestant Christian missionaries came to India from Germany and Switzerland, deputed by the Evangelical Mission Society, known as Basel Mission. In those days, there were superstitious beliefs among people and due to this the upper class suppressed the lower class. Education was restricted to the upper class and the lower class was deprived of education. Later, after the arrival of missionaries it gave education to all irrespective of caste, class, creed, and sex. It also worked with the motto, 'In front of God all are equal'."

On this occasion, 11 retired teaching and non-teaching staff were felicitated.

Raghavendra Rao, former president of MUDA, Suresh Ballal, Roshan Kumar, PUC principal, Jayanthi Purushotham, and Alwyn Colaco were present on the occasion.

We must thank Dr. Veerendra Heggade for gracing the occasion of BEM Institution's 175th anniversary!
Influential people should take the lead to bring all communities closer.
We should all remember that, Almighty God never created any religion.
He created whole universe and humans in his own image and likeness.
He sent prophets to communicate with us and his own Son to redeem us from sin.
He commanded us, to follow him first and then preach his message and love all but not to Judge each other.
God has a plan for everybody's redemption.

Basel Missionaries were not only instrumental in giving education to the poor, but also were in the forefront in industrialization.
Basel Mission Press, Basel Mission Hosiery and BM Foundry changed the socioeconomic fabric of the then South Kanara.
They built two bridges in SK, one in Kadimbala.
They shunned casteism both in the church and in the educational institutions run by them. They firmly said "NO" to a high caste people who asked them to provide them "separate benches" (!!) in Udupi Church and Mercara. BM said NO!
Another high caste group came to the BM missionaries in Mangalore to open an English Medium School at the BEM High School (Mission High School, Car Street) exclusively for them barring other caste children. The BM missionaries said, "NO"
I collected this information in Basel Mission Archives in Basel, Switzerland during my research during 1997-98.
Interested people can have further info on BM in SK/Karnataka and Kerala, at the Karnataka Theological College Archives in Balmatta, Mangalore (Please go to KACES.org and click on KTC).
I am proud to be a product of the Basel Mission and thank God for this blessing!

Congratulations to BEM institution on 175th Anniversary and 3D future building project plan.
While enormous institutions are busy in generating and multiplying the academics and technicians, why they are ignoring the priority of employing them?
Why we need to spend lavishly on fuel to get reward of heavy costs, health injurious pollutions, CAD, unemployment and poverty?
If we use the dead weight on wheels as a pushing force we the opportunity to save a huge volume of fuel, billions of dollars from our oil import bills, crores of rupees from fuel subsidies, elimination of heath hazardous air pollutions and peace disturbing sound pollutions, cost reductions and increase in the capacities of vehicles.
If mobiles revolution why not the automobiles too, to have incredible solutions with amazing benefits? Let us think different and implement change to have a rapid revolution.
