Mangalore: CITU protest - HMS leader clarifies

Mangalore, Jan 27: Soon after CITU organized a protest where its activists were detained by the police, M Sureshchandra Shetty of Panambur railway goods shed and godown workers' union, whois also the district president of Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) addressed a press meet to clarify the issue.

"In Panambur goods shed and godown there are 215 workers from various parts of Karnataka like Bijapur and Bagalkot, who have been working there from the past 35 years. They get loading and unloading work whenever a ship arrives.

"They do not often get work, and what they do is also hard work. We had also provided opportunities to locals in various godowns but a few who joined left the work after three months as it was hard work. All labourers were paid equal wages," he said.

Regarding the protest, he said, "A few workers after quitting the godown work approached various organizations to hold a protest against us, but today with the support of CITU leaders Vasanth Acharya and Sunil Kumar Bajal they organized this protest against me."

Rubbishing their allegations that he was denying them opportunities to work in godowns, he said, "I have never denied work opportunity to anyone. We have ourselves provided them opportunity to work but they quit the job after working for three months, and now joining hands with CITU they are holding protest against me and hurling baseless allegations."

"When there was a problem regarding labourers involving with various organizations, we protested and attended meetings at a national level," he added.

On this occasion Raghuram Shetty, N H Nayak and Yemunappa Ballapur were present.

Mangalore: Police detain CITU activists during protest

Mangalore, Jan 27: As many as 35 CITU activists including two women were detained by the police at Ballalbagh here on Monday January 27 during their protest against Hind Mazdoor Sangh (HMS) district president Sureshchandra Shetty near his residence.

Around 45 CITU activists were headed towards the residence of Sureshchandra Shetty, alleging that he was against employment of locals in railway goods shed and Aspinwall company godown.

Police detained CPI (M) leader Sunil Kumar Bajal and CITU district general secretary Vasanth Acharya as they were heading towards the Sureshchandra Shetty's residence.

Barke police rounded up the other protestors too.
