Mangalore, Jan 29: A patient who was admitted to Yenepoya hospital, Kodialbail after a failed suicide bid allegedly jumped to his death from the fourth floor of the hospital in the wee hours of Wednesday January 29. The family members have alleged negligence on the part of the hospital and a case has also been filed.

The deceased, identified as Lathish Poojary (29), a resident of Madoor, Kotekar, reportedly consumed poison along with liquor on Monday January 27 at around 3 am while he was in a hotel. But panic struck him and he immediately called up his friend for help.

The friend then called 108 ambulance service, and Lathish was rushed to Wenlock hospital. His family was also informed.

Speaking to daijiworld, Lathish's brother-in-law Kiran said that as the family members were not happy with the facilities and treatment provided at Wenlock, they shifted him to Yenepoya hospital two hours later.

Kiran said that Lathish responded well to the treatment at Yenepoya hospital, but on Tuesday January 28 evening, he was given a high dosage of medicine after which he seemed to lost his mental balance.

At around 9 pm, Lathish reportedly smashed the glass of the window in the ICU. As family members are not allowed inside the ICU as per hospital rules, they were not aware of the incident. The nurses and staff, however, were able to calm him down.

It is said that between 10.30 and 11 pm, Lathish tried to jump out of the ICU window, but he was stopped by the people around. His family, though was still not informed, said Kiran.

At around 12.30 am, when everyone was asleep, Lathish leaped out of the window and fell to his death. Kiran said that the family was informed of his demise at around 1.30 am.

The family members alleged that there was no security or enough staff in the ICU, and blamed the hospital authorities for the incident.

A case has been registered against the duty doctors under IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide) in Mangalore north police station.

Though daijiworld contacted the hospital, no one was available for comment.

Patient himself wants to die, so why should we blame the hospital, the hospital is not a police station to keep eye on him, it is baseless complaints, also family wants to spoil the hospital name or to get some compensation from hospital.

We are not allowed to enter ICU. We pay huge amount for ICU so that nurses can sleep in the night ? Only those who have experienced must comment. It is very true that nurses sleep in the night in ICU and do not care for the patient. In their sleep several mistakes have been done giving wrong medicine and led to death or coma.

Yenepoya hospital is a good one.I had a normal delivery there recently.Nurses in the labour ward, especially old nurse is so caring that i remembered my nursery teacher. Will never forget her. Here they bit lacking knowledge. All hospitals should have separate units for suicide patients in the ground floor and no ceiling fan.CCTV CAMERA SHOULD BE INSTALLED or a day n night security guards should be on watch.

ICU means the intensive care unit. Does not necessarily mean that the patient is unable to move. This man consumed poison along with alcohol and had to be kept in ICU so he could be under observation and given immediate care if something would have gone wrong because of the poison.

It was indeed sad that the patient was adamant to end his life. If not for the fatal leap from the hospital, he would have tried some other means!! .
Why blame the hospital for the patients action ? If the patient would have jumped from his house balcony , would they demand to arrest the house owner ?

The hospital also needs to ensure that tempered glasses are used to avoid such incidents.

Bro, why do not you understand he was under a state of total delirium or altered consciousness due to the effect of the poisons and later on due to the effect of medicines given to counter the poison and the withdrawal effects!! So, it is understood, he has done this in a state of absolute altered consciousness and in such state, it was imperative per protocol he should have been restrained and kept in a place where he could not harm himself till he recovered, was counseled and made normal, I hope you got the message!!

Yenepoya Hospital, Kodialbail is a very good hospital.

The hospital is unfortunate to get such a bad patient.

The patient was fit to be in Wenlock only.

The hospital should not be penalized for the fault of the patient and its family members.

The police should take action against the family members for their negligence.

Patients with suicidal tendencies are always in a peak to commit suicide in one or the other way, its not worth enough to blame hospital for the same. what if he would have achieved suicide in his home itself, will it be worth enough to file a case against his own family without knowing the exact reasons???

Many posts are casual and do not know why a person decides to commit suicide like earlier thought, it is definitely not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of total helplessness and despair and the patient requires utmost compassion and help by medication and counseling to go on with life!! As enumerated earlier only those who have gone through such toughest of times in life will ever know the immense pain that takes a person to suicide!!

Just a couple of days ago, there was a reported suicide by the 50 year old foreign CEO of a top auto major having a fantastic educational and experiential background, which employs 30k people all around the world??? So no one is immune, it is a matter of time and circumstances!!

A person in the withdrawal phase of inebriation from any intoxicant/poison requires specialized care from counselors, psychiatrists and a toxicologist in this case since he had imbibed some poison!! A person who has undergone cold turkey and in the withdrawal phase is always restrained to the bed till the complete effect of the intoxicant wanes away and he comes to normalcy and can be spoken sense to and counseled compassionately!! Just because he consumed alcohol condemning him is despicable view!! May his soul RIP!!!

Normally suicide / depression patients are strapped / tied to the cot.
A police complaint is filed on admission.
Now if the case is filed police should have deputed constables on 24 hr duty.
If case is not filed hospital should have had 24 hrs staff on the lookout.

Looks like a case of severe clinical depression. Hospitals usually use some kind of restraint, commonly physical restraint for such cases. its surprising that patient could even get up and leave the bed. if the story is true, then hospital is guilty of negligence and will have to pay.

@ Ronald Udipi,If Family have to pay the bill for broken glass, then Hospital has to bear the cost of his life or has to answer how did a Patient who tried to suicide before kept unwatched in the Hospital,or why his home People were not informed.so simple is it.A good lawyer is certainly needed. The deceased Person must have consumed some drugs with alcohol in the Hotel which led him to get verwirr ,thatswhy he called his friend.second time high dosage of Tranquilizer in Hospital made him to break the glass and jump out.Thats what I think.medicine also has ist side effects if the dosage is too high for a Person who is not very strong .Poor fellow, may his Soul rest in peace.

Committing suicide always the result of bitter life, failures, depression, family history and lack of love within the family and society too.
Also, some medicines may trigger in elevating blood pressure and adrenaline too
It's wise to keep an eye over such people who attempted suicide and not to be left alone at home or isolated.
What made him to take such an extreme step...God only the answer.

Very tragic incident, may his soul RIP!!

Raises many questions about the hospital concerned as to how particularly a person who has just attempted suicide was kept in a room where he could easily break open the window and jump off, till his mental condition was not stabilized and counseled on his attempt to suicide!! Secondly, since the patient himself had gotten admitted after understanding his mistake of consuming poison he could be got highly agitated and confused after administration of certain medications to treat his poison, which is mentioned in the news report, in that case utmost care should have been taken to physically restrain him as is done even in alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers until the patient comes to his normal senses and there is no withdrawal symptom left of the toxic substances and after counseling!! Ultimately, no idea as to whether there was a qualified and experienced toxicologist treating the patient!!!

The patient first attempted suicide, after recovery, he tried many times & succeeded in final attempt.
There itself, its evident its not the direct fault of the Hospital, but they could have asked the doctor to shift him to secure ward or room to prevent further attempts if sedation is not advised at his medical condition.
ICUs are not places for family get together, as hygiene has to be maintained as patients are likely to get infected by all those who visit them, as well as nurses & attending doctors might get disturbed if left in.

PLEASE DO NOT BRUSH OFF A PERSON WHO ATTEMPTS SUICIDE, HE DOES SO ONLY WHEN HE FEELS HE IS CORNERED FROM ALL SIDES AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PATH FOR SUCCOR! ONE CAN ONLY UNDERSTAND THE PAIN WHEN ONE PUTS HIMSELF IN THAT POSITION, NOT OTHERWISE, VERY EASY TO COMMENT IN COMFORTING SURROUNDINGS!!! The hospitals with the Indian mindset only have the rules of not allowing relatives of patients because of space constraint in ICU ward, where as hospitals with international standards have no such restrictions...patients gets tense without meeting relatives sometimes for 24 hours..in ICU wards..
