Mangalore, Jan 29: Confusion seems to abound among commuters and pedestrians at Hampankatta with new traffic regulations in place. Though the move aimed at evolving a signal-free Hampankatta was brought into effect from the evening of Tuesday January 28 a trial basis, the commuters, drivers, pedestrians are facing confusion in the absence of clear guidelines or sign boards.

The new regulation has caused much inconvenience to the drivers and pedestrians, but if the experiment succeeds in bringing about smooth flow of traffic, there is every likelihood that it may be made permanent, and commuters would simply have to adjust.

The traffic personnel, meanwhile, have been busy monitoring the junction to ensure that everyone follows the new rules.

As per the new rules, vehicles plying to K S Rao Road from Milagres road need to take right turn, proceed towards Clock Tower and take a roundabout to move towards K S Road. Commuters from Kankanady and Falnir have no chance but to take the longer route towards the Clock Tower first to go to any destination.

So far, vehicles moving from K S Rao Road towards Milagres road had to simply cross the junction, but now they have to take a left at Hampankatta junction, and then take a right turn near Syndicate Bank on Light House road where a curve has been put in place. The same applies for those going towards State Bank from K S Rao Road. Even private buses have to take the same route, which may lead to heavy congestion near Syndicate Bank due to lack of space near the turning. For now, as it is on trial basis, only four buses - numbers 11, 4c, 6c, 27 - have been directed to take this route.

Also, passengers cannot catch the bus near Syndicate Bank as they used to earlier. They now have to walk to Light House bus stop near Idgah or to Hampankatta bus stop. However, no sign boards have been put up to give directions, but on the first day two personnel were on duty to guide the people.

Ganesh Poojary, speaking to daijiworld said, "As there is no sky walk or any other facility to cross the road, it is very difficult for pedestrians, especially without proper guidelines and continuous flow of traffic. People have to walk from Hampankatta junction to Light House to catch a bus. It is tough for senior citizens to walk this distance, more so as it is uphill."

Philomena, who visits Mangalore once in a while, said, "Hope this experiment succeeds, but there should be proper guidelines so that pedestrians can follow the rules. It is very difficult to walk from Hampankatta junction to Light House bus stop. If a bus bay is built in between it would be more convenient."

Speaking to daijiworld, Uday Nayak, assistant commissioner of police said, "This project is presently in a trial phase; we need to wait and see how it will work. So far we have not received any complaints from public. But a few buses have problems in taking the turn near Syndicate Bank, but once the road is broadened everything will be sorted out. Pedestrians are likely to be allowed to cross the road at two places, near Hampankatta and near Syndicate Bank," he said.

Good idea but, but still we do not have good roads. The bus stop at light house hill should be improved. The buses stop opp. ladies club also, causing problems to all the other motorists. So far it is not signal free, because the authorities never thought about the pedestrians so they are still using the signal. I would first stop all the service and express buses entering the business district, for these buses RTO should make some other alternative then the roads around Mangalore town would be really good.

First remove that BIG Electronic Advertisement display board on the center of circle, creating opportunity for an accident,
Second the road condition is very poor heart of the city.
The traffic signal is not visible in daytime ,if the policeman is not standing, then there will be a accident and traffic jam, need to be taken care.
and finally it is our people need to have little patience while crossing signal.

I remember the days when i used to go to Canara school. I used to walk from school to the stop near syndicate bank or Vijaya Pen mart to get on the bus. I'm not sure how this will work out as i do not think there's any stop between Lady Goshen and Lighthouse hill. That is a really big stretch used by most commuters to get on the bus.

This change seems to consider only the vehicles and i do not see any provision made for pedestrians at all. The solution of utilizing the old bus stand should definitely help solve most problems i mentioned though. Looking forward to this change, But a bit skeptical about it.

The best solution is few flyovers, underpasses or clover leaf bridges. Chop the buildings, pay compensation and widen roads. Additionally walkway bridges at regular distances for people to cross over. If there is a will, there is a way. It has to happen now or later for survival of the city. I do not think there is an easy shortcut. We need a good city planner. For the time being we must appreciate ACP Uday Kumar's initiative.

This is not at all a good idea, as it is creating a real mess and i felt a little danger to as i road on the same road today morning. Peak hours it is too difficult for us. The commentators do not seem to have rode on this road to appreciate it. One should experience or understand the situation to comment on it.

I request the traffic department to change this idea or give up this experiment.

Its a good idea, but the city buses plying from Syndicate bank to State bank they rush towards the junction not allowing anyone to pass ,so city buses have to given a speed limit.
2)Instead of making people walk till light house why cant they utilize the old service bus stand & give a limited time for buses to pick up people, keep a divider for buses entering & coming out.
    3) for 27 no bus I think so he better use the railway station road opposite( town hall). As there are limited buses of 27no.instead of he struggling to turn near Wenlock.
This is just a suggestion on my side.
There shouldn't be any parking for ay vehicles near syndicate bank.No picking up passengers near signal (opposite Komals, laxmi cloth store.

Good initiative from the road authorities. People should encourage the change before opposing it.

But one suggestion to the authorities, make an overpass for pedestrians ASAP before any tragedy occurs. So don't provide any chance to criticize the implementation.

Skywalk is needed and not the underpass because it creates lots of problems for ladies and children. There should be a bus stop between the state bank stop and lighthouse stop.there should be a clear cut way for the pedestrians. Thanks for new traffic rules All the best.

Any New change with constructive motive should be welcomed first before showing resistance. We the public have a tendency towards opposing any new change, coz we simply get used to the system. I Feel experiment in this regard is worth trying, as it was very very congested these days with lot of traffic right from City center mall to Milagris church, from the Clock tower to Syndicate bank. At night and on Govt holidays there will not be signal in this circle yet, vehicles negotiate themselves and move further, Similarly, by adopting this new rule now one can avoid traffic congestion during peak hours. Usually we see big que near city center mall, near Milagris Church, and Near clock tower. It is very difficult to pass this junction as many times we get a double or triple signal in the same spot.
So I really welcome this move, but have one suggestion, Kindly avoid city and express buses stopping near Vijaya Pen mart to pick the passengers, this will further create more traffic jam. Make it free from the Clock tower to Syndicate bank or till KS Rao Road. And last but the least Enough road width should be given for bus and other vehicles to take u turn wherever required.

Calicut is similar ( Much smaller than Mlore) city. But you can find wide roads and flyovers in the city.Mlore we have three Ministers and Highway minister from Mlore udupi dist but still they are planning for adjusting the existing road instead of widening or constructing a flyover.

Mangaloreans have to press "NOTA" button in the next election.

Haris i agree with you, but Calicut is bigger than Mangalore in area. I keep travelling to many places in south india and when compared to other bigger cities like Coimbatore, Kochi, Madurai, Vizag, Vijaywada etc the city Mangalore very much far behind in terms of development. Especially in roads, proper traffic management, etc. Thanks to the elected representative irrespective of all the parties.

first thing road should be widened by removing or shifting Wenlock hospital and oval shaped round- about should be constructed with under pass or sky walk. Many places road should be widened. Most of the bus stops are blocking traffic on the road.bus stops should be slightly inside so that traffic can flow smoothly.Proper planning should be there.

What bus stops? City bus stop anywhere they please, regardless of the traffic behind them. However, when they have a vehicle ahead of them, they blow their horns and flash their headlights, as though the roads were built only for them. RTO and Traffic police are blind to this.

Welcome from the point of the commuter of bus/car/rickshaw. But as a pedestrian, crossing the road is little risky. Every 5 minutes, there should be a siren and police personnel must guide the people to cross the roads at signal point and syndicate bus stop. Initial stage everything is confusion gradually we overcome that and get adjusted.

Very nice initiative by the MCC and Traffic Police. The traffic was moving smoothly today, as i had been on almost all the roads mentioned today. A few years back, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, had done a marvelous job with Exit 10 and Exit 9, by allowing a smooth flow of traffic, by constructing appropriate underpass and over bridges. I can still recollect waiting almost at a length of 2 kilometers and waiting for my chance to pass the signal. Wish we can do the same in Mangalore, it would be a great thing. While i do understand the problem with catching a bus at the Ideal and Syndicate bank junction, but then commuters should realize, that there was never a bus stand there, its just that the bus operators had made it a convenience for themselves. Would recommend and request all commuters to adjust to this new traffic rules. Thanks.
