Woman skydiver from Bangalore dies after parachute fails to open

Salem (TN), Jan 30 (PTI): A 24-year-old woman skydiver from Bangalore died when her parachute failed to open properly after she dived from an airplane during a skydiving sessions at an unused airport at nearby Kamalapuram today, a senior official said here.

The incident happened when Ramya, along with two others, jumped off an aircraft during a skydiving practice but her chute did not open when she pulled the chord at 10,000 feet.

She then tried her reserve parachute but that too did not open, Mettur Assistant Collector Anush said.

Her husband was at the airport and watched in horror as his wife plunged to her death. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The couple were part of Bangalore-based Indian Skydiving and Parachute Association (ISPA), which was reportedly holding such skydiving sessions at the airport for the last three days.

Police said Ramya's husband had filed a complaint, following which a case was registered against the Association under Section 304 of IPC (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

May her soul RIP!! Untimely death snuffed by an adventure sport!! The more adventurous and adrenaline spiking the sport the more the risk of an accident and death, which every adventure sport lover should accept before venturing!!

But strange are HIS ways which nobody can decipher that people playing death defying stunts/sports die in simple accidents, the recent case is of Michael Schumacher, who defied death 100s of times in his formula racing profession but ultimately fell down almost fatally in an ordinary recreational skiing event!! Other names that come to mind are Christopher Reeve and Steve Irwin!!

That proves there is some other force at work in-spite of you using the best of equipment's or people!! RIP her soul!!

Please let me know which sport is "SAFE"??

Each sport has its own risks just you tube the name of the sport and injury and see the results.

By what you say its best to sit at home cause so many people die on the road even if they are walking.

Parachute deaths are very rare. If both the parachutes did not open, it talks volumes about the people who organize these adventures and their professionalism. Indians are generally least safety conscious and it is well reflected in this incident.

But what is more surprising for me is some of the comments here which say 'why should house wives indulge in such dangerous adventures ?'. Despite basic education, our people are still in a primitive mindset and believe a wife's role is society is making coffee, tea, lunch and washing clothes.

RIP Ramya. It is very unfortunate death. Sad she tried her best to pen the parachute, but useless, unexpected death. Safety measures failed. Some guys should have been ready with sofa type sponze or mattress who could run fast keep below where she was falling. Now on they should check properly and tie tyres to their back & head as a precautionary measure. Else let some sportsman type persons run with big bed sheets.

So sad. May her soul rest in eternal peace and give comfort to the bereaved family and friends. Sky diving is a safe game, but this was her bad luck as both the parachutes did not open.

Very unfortunate, high standards are required while training these kind of practices, some independent authority should conduct an investigation to check what went wrong, and licensing board gave them license on what basis also a question, dual malfunction or panic we cant say,, lost a young life....R.I.P

It is too much of a coincidence that both options fail. Parachutes are under stringent checking and testing. There should be more enquiry on this episode.

I am sure Association normally covers themselves by signing the documents (personal responsibility or kind of waiver) by the parachuter. Hence it is the risk that everyone takes. I too did skydiving at Umm Al Quein in UAE. Hence, I know what it means to be diving by trusting that equipment is okay.
