Mangalore, Feb 2 (DHNS): The 812 Foundation which was formed post Mangalore plane crash incident of 2010, has demanded a re-investigation into the incident as the Court of Inquiry (COI) findings on the same were highly 'massaged' and did not reveal the right reasons.

Speaking to press persons here on Saturday, Foundation President Yeshwanth Shenoy alleged that the CoI report by Air Marshal Bhushan Nilkanth Gokhale did not reveal the right reasons either due to incompetence or could be an intentional cover up.

The report covered up the flaws of Airport Authority of India (AAI), both in having an illegal structure at the end of runway and the inability of the fire and rescue teams to reach the spot quickly. He was also critical of the approach of judiciary in the matter pointing the courts never entertained any petition which was filed earlier to the incident inviting its attention on the lack of adequate safety measures at Mangalore airport.

Shenoy contended that if all safety norms were adhered to, only a few lives could have been lost, but not the catastrophic figure of 158. "According to rule, the radar at the airport should be built only by a frangible object with the objective that if in case any plane hits the radar, it easily breaks down thus causing no damage to the plane. But in Mangalore, it was mounted on a concrete platform which was illegal. And within Runway Safety Area (RASA) which is 180 metre for Mangalore, no non-frangible construction is allowed. But the said concrete construction was inside RASA and after the tragedy, the permissible distance was cut short to 175 metre with a motive to exonerate AAI of the homicide charges as the plane caught fire after its wings hit the concrete platform."

Alert since 1997

The 812 Foundation President said that since 1997 the impending safety threats pertaining to Mangalore airport were brought to the notice of officials and courts, but to no avail. A local resident, Arthur Pereira in 1997 had filed a writ petition in Karnataka High Court alerting that in case of an aircraft undershoots or over-runs the runway, there is no required space and the plane would crash down the hillside. The petition was dismissed in 1997 and in 2003. When Pereira filed the same as a special leave petition in Supreme Court, the same was dismissed again. A letter petition in this regard by a trainee pilot, Captain Anthony Keyter to the Chief Justice of India also was not represented.

The recent downgrading of India's aviation safety from category 1 to 2 by US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is a testimony to our poor adherence to the safety norms, he maintained.

Shenoy urged the authorities to strictly comply with the rules and regulations in aviation sector and also to bring to book those responsible for Mangalore plane tragedy.

Why most of Indian leaders are investigating and working for corrective actions. Yet they are not pro-active !!!!
Safety and Security is the last priority in India and because of these reasons incidents are happening.

Indeed, there should be a strong demand from the peoples in and around the airport across borders to open up our politician's eyes for extending the Mangalore Airport runway

On the day of the AI812 accident for years back Aviation minister Mr. Praful Patel said Mangalore Airport runway will be extended by 1000 feet , it is now four years and no news of any progress, except may 2013 Mr. Moily spoke something about land acquisition. My question is how many more years and how many more accidents( God forbid)has to happen? The present runway length is 2450 with a RASA area of 175 in front and 380 meters at the back. There ample space to extend the runway from the landing side by 550 meters and a small amount of land has to be acquired to further extend the runway to 3200 meters. In spite of having good passenger traffic and scope for future Air traffic improvement Authorities are too slow to carry out the work. But if you notice during this period all major Airports and medium ones have undergone rapid expansion. If people have observed Calicut Airport Runway is similar to Mangalore Airport with a steep valley on one side, in spite of that Calicut runway was extended and now B747 and other large and medium size aircrafts can land. That is because it is in Kerala.

Now in Mangalore most of our work is like this - for example Konkan Railway- single track(new contract will come for doubling in the future) , Shiradi Ghat( second contract has already come) , and our roads - very narrow ( like Komana in tulu language)and 2 bike riders die every day)on our roads, same thing with our Airport, after so many years also only 35 aircraft movements, except Jet and Air India no other Int airline operating cause they need well trained pilots to land on this runway.

158 lives were lost in a moment and 150 families were deprived of their breadwinner or loved one. If one of them happened to be some Minister's son or Air India official's son...perhaps the enquiry report could have followed "special yardsticks"

Now the most important question is...if all the flaws which as the 812 Foundation have pointed out are being rectified or not....or if they are awaiting more innocent lives to be lost (sacrificed) ! It's better if all passengers both international as well as domestic, as well as leading lights of Mangalore and North Kerala including MLAs and MPs rally behind the 812 Foundation to ensure this being done at the earliest. Anyone with the Kejriwal spirit willing to lead them ?

What reinvestigation ! It was a serious lapse from a sleepy pilot. 160 lives lost, will your ordeal bring back those lives. AI sucks big time, Whenever you fly , you pray, who knows it may be your last!

Human errors are unavoidable anywhere, but to correct an error if there is no scope for a sudden "go around" due to constraints of length of the runway then where are the safety standards??

For sure Indian Airport Authority is covering up its flaws, That's the reason the stipulated compensation is not given. We all travelers by air should support 812 Foundation.

The urgent need of the hour now is to inquire about the delay in paying proper compensation to the family members of the affected. 812 Foundation can add this also.

In hindsight, it definitely appears that alert and qualified citizens had given a warning signal regarding the dangerous shortcomings at the airport mainly the short runway due to it being a tabletop airport, but none were heeded due to whatever reasons and the 'impending' tragedy happened claiming so many innocent lives, which could clearly have been avoided!!! Kudos to this gentleman who is taking up the issue again so that the aam admi knows the exact reason of this grim tragedy!! Jai ho!!
