Bantwal, Feb 8: Following the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby at Somayaji hospital, angry locals gathered in front of the hospital on Friday February 7 and held a flash protest alleging that negligence of hospital's doctors and staff had resulted in the two deaths.

As a preventive measure to avoid worsening of the situation, the police took Dr Rameshanand Somayaji into custody on Friday evening.

Chanchalakshi, wife of Naveen Kumar M, a resident of government employees' colony at BC Road, was admitted at Somayaji hospital to deliver her second child. However, after the doctors reportedly administered an injection to induce labour, she developed complications and died, and the baby too died in the womb.

Hundreds of locals assembled in the hospital premises and alleged that the delayed action in registering the complaint and arresting the doctor had shown the lackadaisical attitude of the Bantwal town police. A tense atmosphere prevailed in the hospital premises.

The people gathered not only in front of the hospital building but even assembled on the national highway and on the overbridge, thus obstructing traffic for sometime. Additional police teams were deployed at the spot. The police tried to pacify the crowd. SI Sanjeeth Kallur and Pramod Kumar arrived and tried to resolve the issue through talks with the protestors, but in vain.

The protest escalated when the people saw Dr Rameshanand standing near the hospital reception counter and demanded his arrest. Bantwal circle inspector Rajshekar Mestry on receiving information about the protest rushed to the spot and took control of the situation, holding talks with town council member Sadashiva Bangera, Laxman Agrabail, Anand Kulal, Prabhakar Daivagudde, Kishore Kulal, Ganesh Punjarakodi, Rajesh, Bharati, Yashoda and others.

However, the protestors were not convinced. They sat on dharna and threatened that the protest would continue until the doctors responsible for the pregnant woman's death were arrested.

Finally, the circle inspector talked to Dr Rameshanand and took him into custody amid tight security. Only then did the protestors disperse from the hospital premises.

Demand for minister's visit

Alleging that deaths due to negligence by doctors in hospitals at BC Road and Bantwal had increased of late, the protestors demanded that minister for health (U T Khadar) arrive at the spot and conduct an inspection. The minister was then contacted over the phone, but he told the inspector that he was unable to come to the spot and directed him to take necessary action as per law. Though a few such incidents had taken place in the same hospital as well as in others places in Bantwal, no doctor had been arrested, nor did the minister take any action despite appeals, said the locals. It was only due to non-stop protest on Friday evening for over two hours that the police were forced to take the doctor into custody, they said.

Bantwal, Feb 7: A pregnant woman died in a private hospital at BC Road here late night on Thursday February 6, allegedly due to the negligence of the hospital doctors and staff.

Chanchalakshi (29), wife of Naveen Kumar M, a resident of government employees' colony at BC Road, was due for delivery on February 4 and was admitted to Somayaji hospital on Thursday morning. However, on Thursday night she developed complications and both she and the unborn baby died.

As per a complaint filed by Naveen with the police, Chanchalakshi was healthy till around 6.40 pm on Thursday, and had even consumed tea and talked to her family members.

As she did not have labour pains, the doctors decided to induce labour and administered an injection, after which they shifted her to the labour room. However, her condition is said to have deteriorated after administrating the injection. Her body turned turned dark and soon the doctors declared her dead, stated Naveen in his complaint.

The doctors also said that the baby was still alive and could be saved, and advised Naveen to shift her to a hospital in Mangalore. She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangalore by ambulance, but the baby died in the womb on the way. Naveen alleged in the complaint that the medical staff and doctors at Somayaji hospital were responsible for the deaths of the mother and the baby.

Naveen also alleged that when he apprached the Bantwal town police to file a complaint, the police personnel misbehaved with him and refused to lodge the complaint.

Thereafter, newly-appointed ACP Sanjay Kumar arrived at the police station and accepted the complaint. The ASI who was on duty at Kalladka later registered the case.

Chanchalakshi was employee at Mescom. Mother of a six-year-old boy, Chanchalakshi was pregnant with her second child.

Further investigations are on.

Sure,it is a case where two lives are gone and a small Boy lost his mother, parents lost their child and a husband his wife because something went wrong during her labour time.it Looks like some cardiac Arrest or so.but there must be some proof there .Normally when the drip is started, they should have connected the CTG.machine which Shows the Babys heartbeat and pains ,which records. Is it there.?or not connected.usually that Shows if any Problems arise during the process and can be attended immediately.ask for it.first question is whether any doctor was present or only midwife?in may small clinics doctor is called only necessary.here there are many questions to be answered.

Fromic the case history, it appears that this lady died of amniotic fluid embolism. This is an unexpected complication that can occur at childbirth. The DOctor cant be blamed here. If doctors are arrested like this then small nursing homes which do lot of good in rural areas will close down, I am feeling sad for the family of the lady who lost her life but No doctor should be arrested like this I feel, May be the police and medical council must conduct an enquiry and then decide on further actions. Feeling sad at the whole episode

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare and incompletely understood obstetric emergency in which amniotic fluid, fetal cells, hair, or other debris enters the mother's blood stream via the placental bed of the uterus and trigger an allergic reaction. This reaction then results in cardiorespiratory (heart and lung) collapse and coagulopathy. It was first formally characterized in 1941.[2] While it is estimated to be the fifth most common cause of maternal mortality in the world, there has been a discrepancy with respect to the incidence and mortality of amniotic fluid embolism. One likely explanation for this inconsistency is the lack of sensitive and specific diagnostic studies to definitively identify cases of amniotic fluid embolism, leading to both over- and underreporting. Googly.....

for every death, a doctor cannot be arrested. this is just preventive custody. if for every death a doctor is arrested , then nobody will practice medicine.there are avenues for filing a case if negligence is alleged. this is a senior doctor who would ve carried out more than four lakh deliveries in his life time. the maternal mortality in india or any country is not zero. there are so many complications which can happen even in the delivery. if all hospitals need to be set up even in rural areas with modern facilities , it is impossible. our health care system still depends on lot of general practitioners who serve in villages.i don t know about this case, but proper communication with the patient is the key in any doctor patient relationship.

Sad to read and the unfortunate incident happened with the loss of lives.
May her soul rest in peace.
My opinion is all such hospitals must have modern facilities so that they can avert dangerous situation if arises where doctor has to make a concrete decision to save either mother or child.
Perhaps it might be an error from Doctor but he is not GOD.
I born in my ancistoral house without doctor but a mid-wife was present. Thank God for this and HIS blessings with gift of life.
I feel pity for family who lost wife and child.

    To be fair to all
Please publish the case history of the patient. ESI PATIENT .?
If govt employ must have seen a doctor during pregnency term.
Pulse rate/ B.P. / ecg must have been monitored.
Sonography which is in vogue must have been done every 2 months.
    Were any compligation noted ?
    Blood grouping.
    Cardiac tests.
    Etc.
Once these reports are out you can pin point the cause of death.
SAD PART NO ONE HAS CONGRATULATED HIM FOR THE THOUSANDS OF DELIVERIES IN THE PAST BUT ONE SLIP MAY BE DUE TO HIM OR A PROBLEM WITH THE PATIENT AND ALL JUMP AT THE DOCTOR.
NO 2 deliveries are alike, no two women are alike, no two babies are alike and no two doctors are alike .
LETS PURSUE THE CASE ,POST MORTEM ETC THEN GIVE OUR OPINION

Very sad news. let her soul rest in peace.
Doctor can try his level best to save the patient and cure the disease. But we have to understand doctor is not a god, birth and death is controlled by god only. no doctors will kill the patient purposely. whenever such a incident happened, if people started to protest and police filed complaint against doctors, next generation will scare to study the medical science as well some practicing doctors also will stop their profession. in this case what about other patients? every day we can see very big que in all doctor's dispensary, means there is shortage of doctors and number of patients are increasing. Praying and wishing for everybody's healthy & long life.

The situation of the majority of the nursing homes in India are pathetic and appalling. This patient developed complication possibly wrong drug, wrong dose?to add to the further vow they didnt have expert physician/equipment to deal with the complication.Which sensible physician on earth would transfer the dead mother with an alive fetus in the womb to another hospital few kms away?Instead the obstetrician should have delivered the baby via caesarian in the same hospital. These types of nursing homes should be closed and have their license cancelled.Mishaps can happen with anybody, but then they should be able to deal with the complication, if not take an expert help immediately. This is my personal opinion

It is quite common these days for public to react without any thinking. So also the media starts bringing in masala news.
People forget that the very same gynecologist has successfully handled many complicated cases in the past. There is a procedure to be followed and tests to be done before inducing pain through an injection. If there were no adverse symptoms, how can one hold the doctor responsible for doing a good act? What would have been the reaction if the doctor had waited till the last moment and made the case complicated and forced caesarean on the patient? People would have ignored such unethical method. These days most of the doctors force caesarean on patients unnecessarily. This doctor at least tried to do a natural delivery. Unfortunately, there might have been some other complication in which the doctor could not detect or the patient did not disclose. If knowingly the doctor had ignored such possibility of complication, then one can blame the doctor.
Let the medical council investigate and decide what is the reality. Till then no one has the right to blame the doctor for what he did. He has no enmity with the patient. Please note this.

As per previous cases in this hospital, which lacks advanced equipment & medicines to reverse complications in labor or surgery due to which unnecessary deaths have taken place in the past as well.
To add to the above, my personal advice to any is- avoid this hospital in case of accidents, as there you won't get first aid let alone expert treatment in an emergency for hours, which might be life & death in critical cases.
Rest in peace is my condolence to the departed.

Doc the medical profession is totally commercialized now and no more a NOBLE profession!!! Read today's Mumbai Mirror, one doctor received a commission cheque from a radiology center for getting a patient scanned but this doctor immediately returned this cheque and complained to the MCI and the matter is under scrutiny!! In that news report, it is clearly mentioned that sometimes up to 40% of diagnostic fees goes as commission to the recommending doc?? Jai Ho!!!

This is not the first time any death of pregnant woman and her baby. Some days back, same happened at this same hospital. If it happens once in a while it's OK. But if it happens regularly, then something is fishy with the hospital. Good doctors also commit mistakes. Good Pilot also makes mistake. Air India express crash at Mangalore is the best example.

Two young lives lost, may their souls RIP!!!

We lay persons do not know the definition of a hospital so any nursing home too is termed as hospital and mostly the poor and ill informed go to these places where there may not be advanced medical facilities, skilled staff, etc. in case of an unexpected emergency!! Mostly in small nursing homes the next of kin are kept in the dark about the patient's condition till the last moment, and are instructed to rush the patient when things are too late!!! It is always advisable to get admitted to bigger hospitals with advanced facilities!! But, this is only in hindsight as nobody can ward off destiny!!!

I think this Hospital or private clinic is not in a stage to treat pregnant women. Many a times I heard before about tragic cases.and this is the one.main Thing why did they not wait for another week before they inducing labour.when then they are supposed to be ready for any emergency to come. Also strange when the mother turned out blue, had to take immediate step and do caesarean and save Baby.not Transport elsewhere.time is too Long.very sorry to hear such tragedy takes place due to the negligence of doctors.I only advice for the future pregnant women,to look out a Hospital where immediate medical care is available ,not transporting from Bantwal to Bagdad,(Mangalore,or elsewhere).because time is precious for the Baby).here I feel that woman had the strong medicine and pains were so strong that some rupture of the womb had taken place.Did they do any Post-Martum?nobody may tell the truth.my heartfelt sympathy to the family and motherless Boy.
